Soliciting ideas for gauges in place of my radio.

I have a 69 Mach 1. I am aware of the JME radio bezel but I cannot justify the $250 price to myself.

I want to pull the radio and mount it in the trunk and just connect my iPod and play mp3s. I want to mount 3 Autometer gauges in the spot where the radio would have been. Has anyone else done this? I would like to know what you used to house the gauges and what the fit and finish was like.

What about just taking a piece of aluminum cutting out 3 holes and fitting it? Or Summit sells those autometer gauge panels. Get one of those and cut off the mouting bracket/or use it to mount and trim to fit? They aren't to expensive like 15 bucks or so.
