im not an auto guy but i bought and 88 lx with an auto in it for a good deal.the car has some sort of gears in it for sure because the speedo is way off.the reason im stating that is because im not sure what controls the shifting of the trans but i assumed it had to do with a speed sensor or something bc mine shifts very quickly.for example the car may be going say 25-30 and the car has already gone though all the gears but of course the speedo is reading way higher.even if you mash the gas to the floor the car shifts through the gears very quick at like 3,000 rpm or so.my question is how can i change this and also how can i get the car to wind out through first and 2nd since you can only put it in 1st then shift into drive which is basically 3rd.if i hold first out will it redline then shift 2nd and then i can manually shift into drive? the car is carbed by the way but regardless it did this stuff when it was fuel injected too.please help me out guys/girls thanks.

there is a tv cable that controls the shift timing and shift feel. the cable is on the underside of the throttle body. you have the adjust the cable so that it is tighter. be very careful and only adjust it a little bit (like one notch) at a time or you could burn the trans up. also check to see if the cable is even connected to the throttle body. a lot of times the little rubber grommet that holes the cable to the throttle body will dry rot and fall off.

good luck

With higher gears, the AOD usually rolls through the gears pretty quick. That's typical.

You should really consider a shift kit if you want the gears to be held a little longer and have firmer shifts.

Also, pull your speedo gear out and tell us what color it is. If you have 3.73's it should be a purple 21-tooth. If you have 4.10's it should be a white 23-tooth

I beleive 16-tooth is for stock 2.73's.

To figure out your gears. Jack up the rear of the car, mark one tire and count how many times the driveshaft turns for 1 revolution of the tire. If it turns about 3 3/4 turns, you have 3.73's. If it turns a little more than 4 times, you have 4.10's
