I put on some underdrive pulleys last week. When I left work, the car barely started. Im guessing the battery was almost drained due to the UD's. I drove around for 15-20 minutes to try to let the alternator catch up. As I was sitting at a stoplight, (I think) something big shorted out (the speakers thudded real loud). right before the tach died, the needle would bounce around, as well as bounce along with the blinker.

Symptoms:

-tach does not work
-ABS light comes on only when the headlights are on. when turn off the headlights, the ABS light turns off

Please help me, I'm not as good with electronics as I am with mechanical stuff.

Try charging the battery and go from there, I am running an ASP overdrive pulley on my alternator and it helps bring the charge up with the underdrives. You might think about buying one.

Many people tend to leave the stock alt. pully on and run the waterpump and crank pully only.

I had the issue and it killed a batt. and started melting the pos. wire to the alt. Put the stock alt. pully on and not a problem for years.

Is the battery light on?

When my alt. went out, the battery light was on.

Sounds like you need to go back to the stock pulley.

The battery light never came on.

If I put the stock alt. pulley back on, would I have to get a different size belt? Or is the diameter of the 2 pulleys close enough to keep the same belt?

Should be close enough. Just give it a try. Just make sure the tensioner is putting enough tension on the belt( Not bottoming out or just sitting there). Just switch back to normal size and you should be better off.

When on my buddies 95GT, the alt cable on the back of the ALT was loose and melted..... His ABS light was on and the TACH and gauges were not working at all. I would take a peak at that and make sure its not fried or loose. Also autozone or somewhere can test those for free on and off the car. (Off car tester is better).

The alternator wiring looks good.

I pulled out the alternator tonight to bring to the parts store in the morning to get tested. After it was out, I noticed the battery terminals were kinda dirty, so I loosed them up to clean them. As I did this, I saw that the wire from the fuse box to the positive terminal was loose!! This could be causing my charging problems, and makes sense. I was going to put the alternator back on, but figured I'd get it tested since it's already out. Will update tomorrow...

Move up the idle to 800 and see if things go better for you

A new alternator plus battery recharge fixed everything. The idle is around 750-800 Grady, I'm sure it'll keep things going as they should.

Thanks all!

Good to see the prob has been fixed

I usually hover around 800 to 850 with my little GT. I don't have any
problem with my pulleys which btw ... I use the full set.

At night ... when I take off from a stop ... I see the lights dim just slightly
when I first let out the clutch and the rpm's dop a bit. If you were not
looking for it ... you would not notice it anyway

Other than that ... which bothers me in no way what so ever

I love my pulleys
