Spal fan Problems

I have a spal electric fan with a 185 thermo. Well I drove the car about 60 miles yesterday and got the temp up past 185 around 210 and the fan is not coming on. It has power but I am thinking the thermo may not be working. How can I test that to see if it is infact not working. What does that one wire send to the relay that triggers the fan to come on?

The temp sending unit actually grounds the circuit to complete it.

You are using a relay? The gray wire from the relay goes to the sending unit, the orange wire goes to switched ignition, the big red wire goes to the fan, the big yellow wire goes to the battery voltage.

If you are not using a relay, you stand a chance of burning the wires up, as those fans have a lot of amp draw.

If everything is wired correctly, you can simply ground out the sending unit wire, and the fan should come on.

Thanks I will check when I get home. I wired it up about a year ago it worked last summer then it is not now.
Yes there is a relay. I ordered the kit from Mustang Plus and did it via the instructions.

Thanks again

Disconnect the grey wire from the sending unit and touch it to ground with the key on (engine not running).

If the fan runs, the sending unit is bad or not getting a ground (too much teflon tape?)

if it doesn't run:
Listen for the relay clicking.
If it clicks, get a voltmeter or test light and check for battery power at the fuse and relay yellow wire.

If good, check the wires and connection to the Red (fan) wire and the Black Fan ground wire. Put battery power directly to the red wire - still no fan, possible bad fan motor.

If no relay click, check for ignition power at the orange wire. Possible bad relay

Good luck and have fun. :nice:

Tim, you always have the best diagrams and pics. Are you busting out Visio with some custom stencils or something ?

I would bet the sending unit isn't closing the circuit or the relay died.

Ha Ha, No. Normally I use a powerpoint of a similiar circuit I already have. I've never used Visio.

Once Harndog said he got the fan relay kit from Mustangs Plus, I went to the web site and found it. The diagram above is a cut out of the instructions that are linked there.

Yeah, I hear Spal fans are pretty good. My guess ... a loose crimp or connection caused too much current and blew the fuse. lol

Fuse was good not that. I took the grey wire off sending unit and grounded it and the fan kicked on. So I figured new sending unit, but I decided to take it down to the auto shop and pick up a switch so I could turn it on as needed. Well the fan came on at 185 just like it should. I already had the switch at the time so I am going to wire it in any way. Thanks for your help.
