engine pings under load just had custom chip burned for 87or 93 octane and egr/smog delete thinking this would solve the pinging problem but it didnt car was hesitating at high rpms, like it was running out of gas so i took a look at the maf and low and behold it was completely flithy so cleaned it and now it s a totally different car tons of torque but its still pinging under load anyone have any ideas? i have checked vaccums no vaccum leaks brand new plugs gapped to manufacturers specifications i think 54, brand new distributor, msd rotor and cap any help is greatly appreciated or what i could look at to see if its casuing the problem thanks

what is you timing set at? go to far and it will ping under load. stock time is 10 btdc. most peps will take the timing till it starts to ping then back it off a hair. i think mine is at 12 so i can still run 87 octane

Make sure the balancer is in good shape! I've seen them spun so that they are not reading correctly when the timing is set.

Also make sure something isn't rattling around under acceleration and sounding like ping.

I'd go down in two degree increments on the timing until the pinging stops.

Check your coil. I had a pinging problem and damn near replaced ever possible engine part that could be a possible culprit including the timing chain, distributor, fuel pump...and many other parts...turned out to be my coil!

Good catch. I bet your car will run smoother with a new one as well if it has spun.

I've had good luck on my personal car and many others that are beaten regularly with the Professional Products SFI balancers. Have also put on the non-SFI units and they have held up great.

If you go this route be sure to get the proper spacer as well.

I would not go back with a replacement style balancer, they all seem to have the same issues over time.
