Speed adjust for '95 t-5

This might be a stupid question but I have had 3.73 gears in my car for years. the speedo has always been of. From my judgment it seems 15MPH fast, which is alot. I finally took my car to a speedo shop to get it adjusted and the guy told me that in this year car there is not a gear that you switch out to adjust the speed. that there is a sensor that sends pulses to the computer telling it how fast. the only way to adjust it is buy installing a box that changes the rate at which the pulses are sent.

Now this did not seem right to me, but I did not argue with him, I just got an estemite, which was 200 dollars for the box and 100 to adjust the speed and installation. My last car was a 89 Fox and I just changed out the gear in the tranny. It was a t-5, i'm pretty sure it's the same tranny as whats in my 95 GTS. so is this guy a complete idiot or am I wrong? if any has a 95 and has tried this, let me know what your experience changing it out was?

He's both correct, and incorrect at the same time. There isn't really a gear to calibrate the speedometer 100% with 3.73s, the closest one being for 3.55s, but there is a gear attached to the speed sensor. The transmission is identical to the 83-93 Fox trans, with the exception of a 5/8th inch longer input shaft. The tailhousing still has the same provision for a speedometer as the prior model years.

i have a 95 gt with 3.73 gears and 275/40/17 tires and i use the gear in the link i posted below the 23 tooth speedo gear which replaced the 20 tooth black factory speedo gear when my gears were upgraded and i'm 1-2 mph off at 70 mph.do you know if the gear was ever changed from the black 20 tooth factory gear to the white 23 tooth gear after your upgrade to 3.73s.

You can change the drive and driven gears. The drive gear is inside the tranny and installs around the output shaft. It is an 8 tooth gear stock. If you swap that gear for a 7 tooth and swap the driven gear with a 21 tooth your speedo will be dead on. I did this to mine and it works perfectly. You can go the electronic route but it may be more expensive. Let me know if you need the part numbers for the drive and driven gears.

thanks for the help guys, I checked the gear and it still has the stock 20 tooth in it. I order the 23 tooth from ebay and i'm going to try it. hopefully that will get me close enough so that it's live-able.

the 23 tooth speedo gear is the highest speedo gear you can put into the t-5 thats the speedo gear you will have to use but you will definately be at least 5% fast. click on link scroll down to speedo gear and read.or click on second link you can add a ratio adapter total cost is approx $100 and achieve the right reading on your speedometer. or you can replace gear in tail shaft of tranny to achieve proper reading but in most cases replacing the gear in tail shaft, the tranny would have to be removed with dissasembly of tail shaft housing...
