Im debating what gears to get 3.55's or 3.73's.
One of the main factors is about having a correct speedometer, being a picky
person that I am... And I know that a 3.55 is the lowest gear I can run and
still change the speedo gear..

How accurate is the speed-cal, how hard is it to install on an auto. Any feed back will help.

speed cal is accurate I have it on a 5 spd with 3.73's .I had a shop install mine so i dont know about installation and what the difference is on the speed cal for an auto car.ive seen several speed cals on ebay for sale so you might wanna check that out to try and save some money on it.

i'm pretty sure a speedcal won't work on pre-99 autos, someone chime in and correct me if i'm wrong.

I suggest 3.73s, the 3.55s were great for the 5.0s but the modulars need revs to make power.

The SpeedCal can be set to any ratio so that you can dial in your speedo/odo. If you have a GPS, that will help you get accurate speed info, otherwise have a buddy with a stopwatch time you at a steady 60 mph on a 3 mile run (do a few of these).

Dallas Mustang has a forum for SpeedCal users and the posts there, along with TriBlkCobra (designer of the SpeedCal), will help you a lot.

Installation is not bad at all. The instructions are clear and have lots of pics. Just be careful when you tighten up the shifter bolts that you don't tighten them so much that you crush the SpeedCal wiring harness. There is a spot in the console where the SpeedCal will tuck right into, at about 1 o'clock from the shifter handle. You'll see it.

A speedcal will work with pre-99 transmissions. I have one for my 4.30's.

I not entirely sure about 96 - 98 4R70W mustang transmissions and whether they are the exact same as in my 96 TBird. If it is, for 3.73's, you need the purple 21 tooth speedo gear and you could go as high as 4.10's before you require a speedcal.

The only difference I can think of is that the Mustang has an 8 tooth and the TBird has a 7 tooth.

Im leaning more towards the 3.73's, A friend (SilverGT2001) is getting
4.10's installed in his car this weekend.....Can't wait to drive his car and see how it feels

My SpeedCal is deadballs accurate when I changed my wheels size and when I went to 4.10s on my '98 auto GT. You change 8 DIP switches located in the unit to accomodate your changes. I used a friends GPS, the mile markers on the interstate and my cruise control to check accuracy and it was practically deadnuts accurate.

On the 96-98's your only other option is changing the speedo gear which I heard can strip easily. Tuners don't work since our odometers are not electronic.

the thing is dead on...I am exact all the way from 20 mph up to 80 (all the higher I tested), had my wife driving right in front of me while we talked on the cell....thing is easy to install...instructions are "OK"....dallas mustang customer service is terrible...I was missing some parts in mine, emailed them, told me they would be sent...never where...never returned any more emails...I would look elsewhere for it...but it is a CRUCIAL piece for modding, etc...

can anyone vouch for how easy of an install it is for an auto? do you need to remove the whole center consol?

Yes you will need to remove the center console. You'll have to unbolt the 4 bolts around the shifter thing...pretty much loosen them as far as you can without totally unscrewing them. Not sure if it's bad to unscrew all of them totally, I was just wary about it being as I didn't want any alignment issues when rebolting it down...

Anyways, besides that it's a fairly simple install. After you get the shifter console unbolted just pry it up with like a screwdriver or something so you can fit the wiring down to the undercarriage, it will have to go in from the passenger side of the shifter, when you pry it up you'll see a halfmoonish type thing...just route the wires down there. Then what we did was placed a little metal piece on either side of the wiring so that when we retightened the bolts back down it wouldn't cut the wires.

Wow, this is my old thread....

No you don't have to remove the center console. Just pop off the housing around the shifter, loosen the 4 shifter bolts and run the wires under the shifter. When you are under the car you will notice a groove on the right side ( pass side), that is where I ran my wires. Just snug the bolts back down, don't make it to tight or you will crush the wires. I used a little silicone to help seal it.

Good luck...

BTW I went with 4.10's and the speed-cal is dead on!
