speed o gear

Yeah just trying to figure it out, seen that alot of people running the white gear in aode but according to steeda it calls for the black one. just wondering? looks like the stem is longer on the black ine just wondering if anyone was using the black one

ok i'm stumped here.

had 3.27's with a AODE and switched to 3.73's a while ago but never switched out the gear.

which gear do i need? i keep hearing white.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

With the AODE and 3:73 gears you need a 21 tooth driven gear and it's purple. The drive gear with the AODE is a 7 tooth gear. The 21 tooth driven gear will be 100% accurate. The gear you pull will be a tan 19 tooth gear with 3:27 differential.

Not all AODE's have a 7-tooth drivegear. My original '95 AODE had an 8-tooth drivegear with an 18-tooth speedo gear and a 2.73 rear end. A black 23-tooth speedo gear corrected my speedo to a 6% overread after I swapped in the 3.73. My current 4R70W has a 7-tooth drivegear and with the purple 21-tooth speedo gear, my speedo is dead on accurate.
If your original rear end was a 2.73, your AODE will have an 8-tooth drivegear and an 18-tooth speedo gear. If it was a 3.27, your AODE will have a 7-tooth drivegear and a 19-tooth speedo gear.

while were on the subject....i have 3.73's and a manual, but i heard tire size also figures into the equation also (i have 18's). also, is it possible to just have it electronically recalibrated at a shop, although im not sure if many shops even do that, im in the southeast mass area, would Dez tuning do it? and my rpm gauge is off also, (i go by the aftermarket one in the car) how would i go about getting the stock one working correctly.

Save yourself trouble and hook up a Dallas Mustang Speedcal. Just wire it inline and flip a couple of switches and it corrects your mileage no matter what gearset/transmission you have. Also, you don't have to worry about chewing up speedo gears.

Point taken but as Dan95 stated that he had the 3:27 gear which as you noted would mean that the AODE had a 7 tooth drive gear. I should have been clearer.

No you can't do that. You need to add into the circuit an electronic recalibrator for the speedo such as a "speedcal". How far off is the stock tach? Mine is out less than the with of the needle which I would estimate to be close enough for a tach that is marked only in 500 rpm increments.

No worries. It would be easier if we could get hold of accurate info. about which auto trannies have a 7-tooth drivegear and which ones have an 8-tooth. I don't think the info. on Steeda's site is entirely accurate:

Automatic Transmissions with 7 Tooth Drive Gear

1983-1989 Automatic Transmissions

Automatic Transmissions with 8 Tooth Drive Gear

1990-1998 Automatic Transmissions

thats what i've seen everywhere. Very poor info about this on the net. hopefully others will find this thread when they need it.

is this the ford dealer part number? 375-D0OZ-17271-B

my local tranny shop doesnt have one in stock and said to go to the dealer.
