Speed Sensor

Is the speed sensor required for anything other than cruise control? My new speed trans adapter on the right doesn’t have a connection for that plug

Not 100% sure, but I think the auto computer does use the signal for adjusting idle as you coast to a stop.

Mine broke during a trans. change, and I could not find the same one anywhere. No cruise control. and have never had a problem. 89/5 speed. I could not find the same one, and I tried for a year.

I believe that NPD has NOS available for only $160.

The computer uses the input from the speed sensor for the dashpots anti-stall strategy to help prevent the car from cutting off when you are coming to a stop or idling slow in a parking lot. I would recommend sourcing the proper part.

Plus I usually add a T shirt to any LMR order IF it gets me to qualify for free shipping.Adding $12 shipping to a $15 Rock Auto order is a no go for me unless I have much more to order.

Yes, on the 89+ Mustangs the ECU is monitoring the signal on both auto/manual ecus as it adjusts the idle strategy as your roll to a stop.

Without it, some cars will stall out. Even without cruise control, it should be retained and the computer will spit out a VSS codes if it’s failed


On 86-88 speed density Mustangs it’s only used for cruise control. Non-cruise 86-88 don’t even come woth one installed. You need to add one if converting one of these to MaF

I converted my ‘86 non-cruise car to MAF years ago. I did not add the VSS and have had no issues.
