Speedo cable.

Well, inspection is up in Aug and my speedo cable broke right behind the gauge. I now have a T5 and need to know if I should buy a stock (3-speed) replacement,or something eles. Also, anyone know what speedo gear I need for use with 3.89's?

It seems I have read that for a T5, you need the 4 speed cable and left hand rotation gear at the tranny, but do NOT take my word on that. Hopefully someone with experience will help out here.

3 speed cable is a very tight fit.

I think over time it will kink. but it does work.

I tried the conversion cable, but it's way too long, so I'm going with the 4 speed cable. Haven't ordered it yet. In fact your post reminded me I still need to do this. (thank you!)

As to the gear, there is a chart that will tell you which one to get. Do a search here or on Google. I found it when I did my conversion, so it can't be too hard to find.

I'd suggest using the OEM gear from a Ford dealer. the generic white/opaque plastic gears are pretty frail in comparison, and it was only a couple of dollars more (IIRC).

Good luck. Pretty cool having 5 speeds isn't it.

I just went through this recently with my 3 speed manual to 5 speed swap. You need the get the C4 (yes automatic) transmission speedometer cable and order the right speedo gear for your combo of parts (rear gearing, tire size etc). You can order the cable and gear from Modern Driveline pretty cheap.

ive got the tremec and i used a cable for the c-4. I had one from advanced auto and it was longer than the oem piece i have now, but the quality wasnt as good.

I ordered the cable through Modern driveline and it was about a foot too long

Maybe threre is a difference between the first and second gen cars in this regard.

The only way I could have used it would have been to make a loop under the chassis.

Thanks for all your help, I knew someone went threw this before. So I geuss I'll use the c4 cable.

Edit: I went on that link to determine which gear I need to buy, it shows a drive gear and a driven gear. I assume I need to buy the driven gear, and that the drive gear is in the tranny. I will have 245-45-17 wheels and 3.89 gears. With these options, it shows two diffrent driven gears will work (the 18T and 21T) depending on whether the drive gear is a 6T or a 7T. How do I know what drive gear I have?

Go by the color

Most likely it is the 7 tooth. That is the most common in a T5.

The 7 tooth drive gear is the most popular for the T-5, but it certainly is not the only one. What is the number on the tranny's metal tag?
