I just got my 96 GT a couple weeks ago. one of the 1st things i noticed when i was test driving it was that the speedo was way off. dealer didnt know much about cars but was told that the rear gears had been changed, which was pretty obvious during my test drive. car is much quicker then the other mid-late 90's stangs i drove. the car has been fantastic (cept for the annoying 2-3 grind when shifting). the main problem is that the odometer registers about 1.25 miles for every mile i actually drive. i dont know what was the standard gear for the 5-speed gt or what the gear was changed to. what i want to know is if it just needs a computer adjustmennt or a mechanical change on the speedo cable.

Sounds like you have 4.10's. Better way to tell is to see what RPM's you are running at a certain speed.

There are two way of correcting the speedo error. One is with a new speedo gear in the tranny. I've gone this route and found they get chewed to pieces in about a year. The other is a speed calibrator. Most of your bigger Mustang parts websites will ahve them.

i have a hand held tunner that i have used for many things. it can be used for
correcting wheel size and gear changes. you might waunt to look into one,
they are about $350-$400. in my opinion if you are into your car get one.
they can pull codes and many other useful things.

BEASTang96 and rw98gt:

A flasher or chip cannot correct the speedo/odo in pre-99 Mustangs because they are not electronic. The only solutions are a VSS gear with more teeth (NOT recommended) or a SpeedCal or Abbott ERA ($100 approx.). I have the trusty SpeedCal in my car and the speedo/odo are dead-on accurate. The VSS gear with more teeth is a cheap solution ($20) but it is not recommended because the teeth are quite thin and they wear (and break off) and the gear will not get the accuracy that you really want.

HTH,

Chris
