I put a new speedo gear in when I put the 3.73s in.

I forget which one it was though.

Which one is it?

The top one is 21 tooth and then below is the 23 tooth.

What do i need?

Purple 21 tooth speedo gear. It can be obtained at your ford dealership or online.

Justin, if your car is a 99+, all you need is a tune.

if your car is pre-99, you need a tune and a fix for the VSS. The speedcal will be more accurate and last longer than an after market gear. bite the bullet and spend the money, you'll be happy you did later.

justinschmidt1:

For the auto (it had 3.08:1 rear gears from the factory), you need a 23-tooth (white) gear. You can get it at the SVT/FRPP parts counter.

Free advice: leave the stock gear on the VSS and install a SpeedCal. The 23-tooth gear has very thin teeth that shred (as you know). The speedo/odo will still be about 5% off with the white gear. You are racking up "ghost miles", 105 for every 100 true miles. The SpeedCal will let you get the speedo/odo to be accurate -- no ghost miles and no excuses if you get a speeding ticket, lol. I have had a SpeedCal for many years and it has worked flawlessly and the product support is top-notch.

I wanted to do the speed cal...but the install looked like a PITA so I figure Id rather take 5 minutes and throw a gear in it

The installation is not a big deal. The instructions are very well written and come with many, many helpful pics. If you get a SpeedCal, send me a PM or start another thread for help. It's a lot more reliable and accurate than a thin-toothed speedo gear and it is not tough to install.

GL,

Chris
