Well, I tired using the mopar speedo gear for my new 4.10's. All was good until all of a sudden the speedometer stopped working. So I pulled the gear back out to see what happened and the darn thing is gone. I think the retaining clip popped off and the gear went along for the ride. So now the clip and gear are somewhere inside the transmission! Is there any danger in leaving them in there and replacing the gear? If they are just sitting in the bottom of the transmission can I leave them there or is this a recipe for trouble?

They wouldnt have gine into the trans,
Look inside the speedo hole, Can you see anything inside?
You will also leak Fluid now that the speedo gear isnt there,
I think 50resto sells the speed sensor and that kinda stuff,
But That "C" clip your talking about is mounted outside the trans and bolts to the side of it,
How on eart could it go inside the trans
Also the speedo gear is driven by a 6 7 or 8 tooth gear depending on yeah inside the trans, That would stop it from ever going "inside"
Chances are its fallen out and now is lost in the road like the millions of hubcaps that people never find again

OK, heres the whole story. I went from 2.73's to 4.10's. Because of the 8 tooth drive gear I needed a 27 tooth speedo gear to make the speed correction. Obviously no one makes a 27 tooth gear, FMS only makes a 21 tooth thats used for 3.55's on up. Mopar happens to makes a 23 tooth which is as close as I could get. The only problem is that the Mopar gears slot for the retaining clip wasn't big enough. The gear itself has a slot the a retaining clip slides into to hold the gear on the shaft. When I was trying to et the retaining clip back on it bent. So once i got it to fit it wasn't secure i guess. As a result the clip came off and the speedo gear went along with it. So when I pulled the speed sensor out it looked exactly like it did in that picture from 50resto.com. http://secure.50resto.com/product1....Category_ID=145

Aye I know what you are referring to. Not sure how the the clip could back off the gear considering that the gear fits pretty flush with the hole it fits in. I would think the clip is at the bottom of the tranny, and gear was prolly ground up pretty good. I would not worry personally. Try draining the fluid to see if there is any plastic bits in it if you really want to know. Other than not worrying about it, you would need to dissassemble the whole thing to find out.

That sucks, now its a whole other problem lol,
Id take the trans out,
Drain the fluid,
Turn the trans upside down and make sure nothing is loose inside of it,
Then refill and refit,
To take just the trans out and leave the bell housing it really isnt hard and dosent take that long,
Better to be safe than sorry,
Id like to say the trans would just shred those things if indeed it was inside,
But I wouldnt want any foreign particles in my trans, and considering it dosent take that long to remove Id go ahead and do it,

the housing where the speedo gear rides is separate from the main parts of the t-5, the only things back there are 5th gear drive and driven gears and the speedo. If you dont want to pull the trans out try using a small flexible extension magnet to fish out the metal clip through the hole for the speedo. You cant get the plastic gear like that but it is less likely to do any damage to the metal gears.
