what would cause my speedo gears on the speed sensor to keep stripping out? I had gears put in about 20k miles ago and they put a red one in and it got chewed up. I replaced it with the white 23 tooth one which was dead on for the 3.73's but it got chewed up after a week! :bang:

what would cause this? also don't know if this helps but befor they stop working completely they will still work under high loads like 5th gear at 2k rpm/full throttle.

Adam is right. The white gear is not a Ford part and doesn't fit right. I got my red gear from Ford and haven't had any trouble with it other than some speedo inaccuracy. The speedo gears probably still work when you're going fast because they will turn at speed and skip over the part without teeth to a part with teeth.

I went through a few 23's... If they go bad, they can also cause your cruise control to stop working... Also, a 23 tooth gear on 94-95's (with their 8 tooth trans gear) are not dead on, it's still off some. To properly fix this, you need to replace the gear in the transmission. Replace it with a 6 or 7. This isn't easy though... I went with the 6 and 18 for dead on 3.73 readings.

Ok, thanks for the info. but why would the red one get chewed up after 20K miles? anyways it looks like I'll be without a speedo since I'm so used to driving without it anyways.
