Speedo problem?

JUST BOUGHT MY 3RD MUSTANG YESTERDAY FROM A DEALER. ITS A 1990 5.0 LX
SPORT NOTCH. CAR HAS A FEW MINOR PROBLEMS, BUT ONE THAT HAS BUGGED ME IS THE SPEEDO, ITS A 85 MPH ONE. VIN NUMBER SAYS ITS AN 5.0, AND IF I REMEMBER 89-93 GOT 140 MPH SPEEDO, IF IT HAD AN 5.0. THE SPEEDO HAS AFTER MARKET WHITE GUAGE FACES ON IT. A LITTLE RICEY FOR ME PUT I'LL KEEP. DO YOU THINK THE PREVOIUS OWNER PUT THE 85 MPH WHITE GAUGE FACE PLATE OVER THE 140 MPH SPEEDO? WHEN DRIVING AROUND TOWN, THE FASTER I GO THE MORE SHES OFF. MUST BE CAREFUL TILL I FIX IT BECAUSE THE SPEEDO SHOWS IM GOING SLOWER THAN I'M ACTUALLY AM. IS THERE A SPEEDO TOOTH I CAN GET, AND WHICH ONE SO I CAN KEEP THE 85 MPH SPEEDO. PLEASE HELP!!

Probably. Just take it somewhere and get it calibrated if it bugs ya that badly.

Are you stationed in Montana?? I didn't even know we had a base there! I'm at Davis-Monthan in Tucson.

If the car is an original 5.0 it definitely would have the 140 in it. I would guess you're probably right and someone stuck the wrong face on it. I don't know what it takes to get them off, you might be better off looking for another cluster or speedo.

the only stang's that had the 140 speedo in 90 were gt's,can't remember but i think they were convertible's only.gt and lx 91-93 had the 140 speedo after that!

No. All V8 cars after sometime (early) in 89 had 140 speedos.

I have an 89 LX 5.0 with the factory 140 speedo, but the darn fueld guage is inop I think.

here's the deal! that year 1989 ford used the remainder of the 85mph speedo it had left in inventory. after those where gone in sometime in mid 1989 they started using the new stock of 140mph speedos. your 1989 mustang 5.0 was built in the first few months of that year. that is why you have 85mph speedo. i researched this and plus i have a '89 5.0 that came with stock 85mph speedo. if you swap it for 140mph you have to get the speedo that does not have the airbag cut out column for the dash. but theres your answer.
