speedometer gear.. 3.73??

Just got 3.73 gears.! Cant wait to put them on. Anyone know the size of speedometer gear i have to buy? 5.0 resto doesnt seem to have for my year 1992. If someone could give me a link or witch one to buy I would appreciate it. Thanks again guys

Yup,I put 373's in my stang back in December.I have an aod,and used a 23 toothed gear that I ordered from Summit( 19 bucks) 3 months old and it works great!

A 92 T-5 has a 8 tooth drive gear in the tailhousing. A 23 (white) will get you close, but not dead on. 8/23 is dead on for 3.55's. To get dead on, you need to swap the 8 toother for a 7, and run a 21 on the sensor. Most people with 8 tooth drive gears and 3.73's will run the 23. Your speedo AND your odometer will read higher than actual. More miles will record on your car than you are actually putting on. That kinda sucks.

23 is the largest made. Because of that, the teeth are thinner and more prone to breakage. Ford doesn't make any 23 toothers. 21 is the highest they go.

What tranny do you have? The one for a 90-98 T-5/AOD is 23 tooth. (21 tooth is for 3.27 my bad)

The formula used on this webpage is the same one that's in the Ford Racing catalog.

After looking over this info again, I'd suggest the 6 and 18 for the compatibility with other common ratios. This is, of course, if you are going to change the drive gear. There is a pretty good match for each common ratio, so if you were to change later, you wouldn't have to change out that internal gear again.

Switch to a 6T or 7T drive gear and the appropriate driven gear or expect the speedometer to be anything but 'dead on accurate' with an 8T drive gear.

To change the drive gear, the trans tailhousing needs removed. Never done it myself.

yes - 7 and 21 OR 8 and 23 (OR 6 and 18).

I've done it - and on my car the tranny has to come out. I don't have enough room through the shifter hole in the floor to drive the pin out of the shifter shaft. The tailshaft housing of the tranny has to come out. I suspect even if you could release the shiftershaft with the tranny in the car, getting to some of the top bolts on the housing would be a pain in the rear. Of course tranny out means exhaust system and driveshaft have to go. It's not complex, but it is time consuming.
