my car has no spout connector next to the distributor, i believe it is necessary to remove in order to set timing but does it need to be in there at all times

What year car is it? Some years have the spout in a different location like around the air filter box.

it is a 91, it is tied into the wiring harness that plugs in into the distributor, i want to check and change my timing but i understood that it had to be taken out in order to set the timing but didnt know if it had to go back it cause mine is missing

You can drive with no SPOUT connector, but you'll have no advance to your timing. Some guys run locked-out timing with boost, to ensure they don't run into any detonation.

If you do a search on here for it, there are some people that have lost theres. ALl it is is a little jumper IIRC. There was a post on here a while ago about fabricating your own just with some wire.

splice the wire and put a fully insulated male connector on one side and a female on the other...put it together and when you wanna set the base timing, pull it apart...i lost mine the other day and went to drive it and it was misfiring bad at 3500 i could see it on the tach.

Did you find one?

When you check your initial timing and adjust your initial timing, you have to do it without the spout. 10* is stock timing. People get away with anywhere between 12* to 16* on 93 otane. I like to run around 14 in the winter, and 12 in the summer to avoid detonation, but we've had a pretty hot summer up here in Mass so far.

I'm pretty sure that clockwise advances the timing, counter-clockwise retards it.

The jumper wire will work fine. SOme guys even install a switch for quick timing changes.

Half the FOrds out there use a SPOUT connector like ours (if you hit the J/Y).

Good luck.
