Ok here is a quick little torque converter/auto trans tech. In order for a car to come to a stop and it not stall the engine you have to somehow disconnect the trans from the motor. This is what a clutch is for in a manual car. Well a auto trans uses a torque converter do do this. Basically a torque converter is a centrifugal pump. The pump throws the fluid to the outside and into the vanes of the turbine, as it does this there is a vacuum that is created and it draws in more fluid to the converter and increases the pressure and makes the connection to the transmission (there are a few more steps and it's a little more technical than that but that is basically how it works). Now to the lock up stuff. The torque converter will actually multiply the torque output to the wheels when you accelerate thus the name it carries. But to do this the engine has to be spinning faster than the trans. At higher speeds the trans will catch up with the engine but is still slower cause it a non-lock up converter there is always some slippage. This is what causes the auto cars to get a little lower fuel efficenty than a manual car. So to try and stop this effect most newer cars have a lock up converter. So when the two halves of the converter get up to speed the clutch locks them together so they spin at the same direction so now your engine and trans are spinning at the same speed and that slippage is gone. Now electronic and mechanical lock up have to do with the type of transmission. The AOD with a lock up converter will lock it's self up manually since it has no electronic control over the trans. The AODE transmission that uses a computer to control the transmission will lock up the converter based on input from a electronic sensor that tells the computer when to lock it up. This can sometimes be bad because the sensor can fail and tell it to not lock up at all and your gas mileage will suck because of it. This has happened to my thunderbird and also to my buddies lightning as well.
Nice write up, very informative! I always wondered why manuals got better fuel efficiency than auto, I always thought it was because of having the controlled shift points.
I learned a bit myself about the difference with a lock-up converter. Very good write-up. As for the AOD converter working with an AODE I can tell you for sure no. I know this because my car was in the shop to get the converter I purchased put in. When the trans was dropped it was discovered I was sent a converter that was for an AOD not an AODE . Now I double check all my part #'s before sending my car in for work.
