Stang moves while in gear & veh off..?

I parked my '99 Mustang GT on my friends driveway, with about a 30° angle/slope to it, and I forgot to set the parking brake right away. I usually put it in 2nd gear just in case for safety while always setting the parking brake. Well, when I let off the brake the car started rolling/kicking backwards... is this an indicator that my clutch is about to fail? The car has 106,600 miles on the stock clutch - which I haven't abused...much (couple of burnouts). I'm hoping it's the clutch and not the transmission - what do you think could cause this?

mine did the same, i put it in 1st,2nd, AND Reverse and the mofo STILL slid down the hill WITH the e-brake on i mentioned it to a mechanic, and he couldnt tell me anything about it lol

lol - that sucks man.... I was hoping it would be a simple (nearly) fix as just changing the clutch. It kicks real bad as if you were to pop the clutch every second, but going backwards... I'm just hoping it's not the trans.

What are some indicators of the clutch going out? I'm trying to squeeze as many miles out of it as possible - due to trying to change jobs and keep on track with the '66 "money bucket" mustang.

Haven't tried that yet, if it does the same thing in both those scenarios what would be the cause?

Clutch is going out, or not being allowed to engage all of the way. I suspect you would have known about it by now if it wasn't engaging all the way. Try getting on the road in 4th at about 1500rpm and floor it to see if it starts slipping.

Sounds like clutch to me. I installed a new clutch in my Mazda B-4000 a few yrs ago. It would also move while in 1st gear. Turns out the clutch was defective. I installed a new one and everything is good. I'm 99% sure it's your clutch. Your pressure plate may also have problems. Broken springs won't let it engauge fully but I think you would know that. i doubt it's a bad clutch if it was doing that because that bucking/kicking motion indicatates that the motor was turning over. just remember, 1st gear when facing uphill and reverse when facing down

4th gear at 1200+ works just fine, good test - never thought about that one!

...? key was not in ignition, was it trying to do something like a push-start?

Not turning over with the key. When you put the car in gear, it is the compression of the engine that holds the car in place. You were on a steep enough slope that the pull of gravity on the car was enough to overcome the compression. The bucking comes when one cylinder passes TDC and the next cylinder approaches it and slows down because it is building compression on that cylinder next and the cycle continues.

your clutch is fine..... the bucking was the compression on the pistons. Keep it in first of reverse when parked.

DOnt use 2nd for parking..

1st and reverse only buddy.

In a manual transmission car it your 1st gear is your lowest gear meaning it takes the most inertia for your car to move one revolution. meaning your car stays in place better if your parking brake was fail.

1st and reverse gear have the tallest gears. They require the most effort to turn the wheels.
