Does anybody have any tips on removing the upper starter bolt on an 89 5.0? I believe it has the older style starter, but i cant get to the upper bolt. does anybody have any tips on how to get it off? thanks.

i can get to mine fairly easily from under the hood. but if you have your smog equipment there its out of the question unless you take it out. just use a long extension. you wont be able to turn the ratchet that much but you can get it out

I have found that removing the passenger side front tire will give you access to the upper starter bolt. Good luck.

I do mine with the tire in place and all my smog crap in the way - by doing what IronMedic said and sliding the extension/socket through the K-member. Works like a charm.

i've gotten in there with as few as one long extension, don't remove anything. Just grab some extensions as mentioned and go in there and remove the bolt.

There is such a thing as a wobble extension. They allow the socket to literally wobble around. I got a cheap set from harbor freight . They help a bunch. You would be surprised how much that little bit of movement will help you get into tight places.

I took off the passenger tire as well, used a bunch of exetensions and a universal joint, finally got it off.

Now you get to spend the next 30mins fumbling with the starter until it is in the right position to slide out from underneth. Gald I replaced it with a mini starter!!

man that sounds like it sucks. i just replaced starter and had to turn the wheel and go thru the k-member (i think thats what it was, the metal thing with the hole just big enough for your hand to fit through) to get the top bolt and the wire connecting bolt. when i pulled the starter out and then put the new one in my tranny cooling lines got tweaked and messed up the o-ring inside the fittings at the tranny so i ha to replace the fittings. car was down for two days but now i got a rebuilt starter that sounds great. luv it oh btw, no extensions cept a 2 incher. wobblies u cant torque the bolts as much as they need to be torqued right? ive tried using those before and theyre great but i find it hard to get the bolts snug with those, just my experiences thanks for listening and tune in next week for the dramatic finale
