I am looking to replace my starter with a mini high torque starter. When looking for starters online, I see starters that won't fit 153 tooth trannys or 164 tooth trannys? I don't know what my tranny has, and how does the starter have anything to do with the transmission? If it helps, I have a standard issue borg warner T-5 rebuilt tranny.

Which starter do you recommend, and should I get a new selonoid also?

I did purchase brand new battery cable wires, and a 4 guage starter power wire (was told this could be the cause of my not starting when hot problem).

No vacuum leaks, gets fat spark, fuel pressue checks out ok. Timing is dead on at 12 degrees. Cylinder pressure tests are all within line. Starts fine when cold, and runs great! When hot, WILL not start. Only cranks and cranks. If it catches a few hours, feels and sounds very sloppy when starting, like the starter barely catches.

Thanks and have a good night.

When they are talking about the number of teeth they are talking about the flywheel. I believe that the 81 and later engines use a 157 tooth flywheel. As far as the car not starting when it's hot. If it still cranks then it is not your starter. I had the issue recently and it turned out to be the PIP sensor in my MSD distributor. I wouldn't start spending money on parts until you do some troubleshooting. Look for JRichker's cranks but won't start thread. It has a lot of good details on where to start.
