starter starts...but won't stop!!! need a little help here...

so i got my starter to work- somewhat- but when i put my battery cable on- the starter starts cranking without the key even being in the ignition. the car starts if i have the key turned all the way on, but the starter won't stop. what is wrong with it?

sounds like the solenoid is stuck on the starter, same thing happened to mine.

ok, so what did u do about it? my selenoid is mounted on the fenderwall

A. Whack the solenoid 1/ a screwdriver, wrench, hammer, etc.,
or
B. Replace the solenoid.

Mine sticks every so oftern, so I have to get out of the car, open the hood and hit it w/ a pair of iers.
Pretty gay.

Get a new solenoid. I went to an auto zone and got a heavy duty one.

Attempting to start the car with a half dead battery can tack the starter relay contacts together (in case that's happened lately and you're lookin for a reason as to why this happened).

I was having to get a new one like every other week. Then somone told me to add an extra ground. I did it and have not had a prob. in over a year.

Also check the wires at the solenoid, make sure you hooked them all up right. But ya, most likely you need a new solenoid. I always carry a backup in my car. Ya never know.

I'm re-vamping this thread, even though I already answered a long time ago....
I've replaced my starter three times since. Sometimes it goes for a LONG time w/o sticking open. I replaced it the other day w a duralast HD, and the first three times it started, it stuck open. Replaced it that same day w/ another, and no problems the first three starts, but now it's almost every time. RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!
So what is it and why??? I'll try adding the extra ground, but seriously, W T F?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
It's so embarassing, walk out in the parking lot, and someone's admirirng your car, and they want to talk all about it, and then you get it to leave, and your starter's grinding it's little heart out and you have to pop your hood and run out of the car and smash it with a pair of pliers.
It's not attractive to the opposite sex.....

You can avoid the "sticking solenoid" problem by upgrading to a 95 starter. Get a starter from a 95 5.0, it will bolt right in...and it is easier because it is a tad smaller. You will need to move the starter wire from the nearside post on the solenoid and move it to the + battery terminal. Then you will need to run a small gauge wire from the nearside solenoid post (where the starter wire used to be) down to the trigger post on the starter.

I fried a couple solenoids, which in turn fried the starters because they wouldn't stop sending power to it. I since switched to the 95 starter and have no problems what so ever. Plus the car starts a little quicker.

OK, so today I had the problem again w/ a little bit of ECT issues and remote starter issues mixed in. Long story short, my NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE CAUGHT FIRE AND MELTED THE WIRE RIGHT OFF THE TERMINAL.
not good.
My question about the quote is, when you say add anopther ground, are you talking about another ground to the battery/chassis? Cuz I had wanted to add a new ground anyway, mine was kinda crappy. I just hope I didn't short out the whole electrical system.
Could I have????
