Starter Sticking! replaced 3 solenoids and ignition switch but still no fix!

I am losing my mind trying to figure out what my problem could be.

sometimes when I start up the car the starter will stay on when the key is off.

sometimes turning the key to the crank position a few times while this is happening will fix it and sometimes i have to remove the battery cable to get the starter to stop cranking.
when the starter is stuck on, removing the starter wire from the solenoid doesn't do a thing. sometimes hitting the solenoid does however.

I have replaced the solenoid 3 times and replaced the ignition switch. (all parts store brand, not O.E.M). with each new solenoid and the ignition switch it cured the problem for a few days, but it seems to reoccur even with the new parts.

I noticed that the more the starter sticks, the more frequently it happens until i replace the solenoid again.

Also my car is more prone to this problem when it has been running or it is a very hot day.


could this be my starter? or is there some electrical problem in my car that causes it to eat through starter switches?

You remove the starter cable or the thin wire that slides onto the top of the solenoid?

If the former, check your starter.
If the latter, it can also be the fender solenoid latching.

It is the solenoid latching. i removed the little slip wire. i havent touched the starter cables.

Assuming you dont have a piggyback solenoid on your starter, replace your fender solenoid with a decent one. Some folks have had good luck with Napa's version. Otherwise, I'd use a Motorcraft piece.

Note that if your battery is discharged and the battery struggles to crank the engine over, this can cause a solenoid to latch.

Do you have a rear mounted battery?

I had the same problem a few monthes ago....it got worse. It got so bad I had to disconnected the battery to stop the starter from spinning.


I had to replaced the starter.
