Starter won't disengage

65 289 w/C4 and new starter. There is a lot of noise after the car starts that is coming from the bell housing. I replaced the starter because the starter gear was not retracting but the noise is still there. The ring gear around the TC looks OK but it may be binding??

Pull the inspection plate off the bottom of the bellhousing and make sure the starter gear is retracting as it should.

You may need to shim your starter a little, which is very common practice. Usually the manufacturer provides a spec for this and some even include a shim. My Power Master starter included shims.
