Steeda Clutch Cable Adjustment and Squeeking Noise

Hey,

When I got this 94 GT I didn't like the clutch engagement point the previous owner had on it, so I lowered the engagement point (closer to the floor) and I noticed that the trans started making this loud squeeking noise whenever my foot wasn't on the clutch pedal.

Had a friend of mine look at it, and he adjusted something on the trans end of the clutch cable setup to try and alieviate the problem. Long story short, the trans still squeeks but now the pedal is much higher and the cable adjustment on the firewall is turned all the way to the firewall now.

So, I'd either like to know how to change this back to the way it was so at least the engagement point is back to normal, or ideally, how to put the engagement point back to normal AND get rid of that rotating-sort-of squeeking sound that happens when my foot isn't on the clutch. That squeeking happens whether the car is in gear or not, but only when my foot isn't putting some level of pressure on the clutch pedal.

Keep your friend away from it.
That's the throw out bearing you are hearing.
Sounds like you have an adjustable cable and he loosened it too much. Tighten it back up at the trannie, then fine tune at with firewall adjuster. It can be a frustrating, hit or miss experience, but the more you play with it, the more you'll learn.

Yea it's that Steeda clutch cable with the adjuster on the firewall.

So the throwout bearing squeek is just not going to go away without replacement? It squeeked before my friend got his hands on it.

Lastly, should I bring the adjustment on the firewall out (it's all the way against the firewall now) before I start toying with the cable side at the trans? Provided that answer is yes, I'm going to tighten the tension on the cable at the trans in order to be able to re-adjust the firewall adjuster to bring the engagement point down further than it is now?

Well if it's all the way in, you need to bring it out. This will increase the tension and could eliminate the squeak. BUT, if you can't adjust it enough at the firewall, dial it back in again, adjust at the trannie, then adj again at the firewall. The firewall is to fine tune it. Adjusting at the trannie is for larger adjustments.
TOB squeak is VERY common with aftermarket clutches. The Ram TOB, available from Summit, is a popular aftermarket replacement.

After he made the adjustments at the trans, adjusting it all the way to the firewall, at the firewall, still left the engagement point too high for my liking. Since I can't lower it any more at the firewall, obviously the adjustment has to be made at the trans, to basically reverse whatever he did. I basically want the clutch to engage much closer to the ground. So would that mean tensioning the cable at the trans, or loosening it?

Getting in deep now...it may never be the same. OK, for what it's worth, we bought the $20 maximum motorsport clutch pedal adjuster to, ultimately, get the pedal height where we wanted it. Screwing around with the cable has its limitations. Best $20 we ever spent. $28 including shipping...on our doorstep in 4 bus days. 30 min install, if you take your time.
With that said, to lower the pedal (closer to the floor) you would want to give additional slack toward the pedal. As you push the pedal down, you pull the cable.
In the end, to keep the TOB quiet, you'll need some tension on the cable-pedal.

Well before he messed with adjusting it at the trans, the engagement point was fine, it was just squeeking. In an effort to get rid of the squeeking, he tried to adjust the cable tension from the trans. Ultimately, there was still the same squeeking, only after he adjusted it from the trans, it couldn't be adjusted far enough down from the firewall anymore. So I'm basically wondering how to undo what he did. So put some slack in the cable from the portion going from the firewall to the trans, from the trans, yea? Also, should I adjust the firewall part out a bit first, so there's some room to adjust it later?

Yep, undo what he did. And, yes, adj the firewall adjuster to give yourself some room to play with later....you're getting the idea already...watch out now, you'll be thinking about this in you sleep. :D
Let me know bro....
