steering column

i'm trying to figure out why i have play side to side in the column of my 67
i took it apart today and i think there are parts missing. there is a tapered ring that seems to be what tightens the assembly but i dont think the steering wheel contacts that when i tighten everythin up . is there something missing ? i thought there was a spring envolved here

If there is no spring about 1.5 inches long you have found your problem. The steering wheel pushes the spring which pushes the taprerd collar into the bearing in the collar on the steering column.

thank you very much kind sir, I thought there should be a spring in there but I wasn't sure since I havn't had a steering wheel off in 20 or so years. I just bought the car and have been correcting many assembly mistakes

ok, I got the spring and reassembled the column now the steering wheel is very hard to turn. There is a tapered metal bushing that sits under the spring that seems to be locking everything up. Is this the remnants of a bearing? Am I missing more parts?

Went to the mustangs plus car show today and spoke to one of the owners about my steering column problems. After looking at a few diagrams he took me out back to a 67 shell he pulled the end of the column off and told me to take if home and disassemble it so I could see what I was missing and how it all went together. Seems the previous owner replaced the bearing with a spacer and left the spring out so it would still turn. Now it's all good to go. This was above and beyond cust. service , thank you mustangs plus
