Hey

Starting this morning, occasionally my Mustang seemed to creak around corners or bumps. Just an hour ago though, I realized while driving (with the new SCT tune installed ) that it was in fact related to the steering. I turned the wheel left and right, and within a very small range from the steering wheel pointing straight, there was a definite creak in the left front wheel. It sounds almost exactly like your basic metal creak, like mabye in the hull of a boat or something, or when you walk around on a wood floor and the planks creak, but a little more mechanical. It is a bit conerning though, and the mileage on the Mustang is low (1100). Does anyone know what might be wrong?

improper torque on the rack bushings, and/or defective rack bushings. Seems to be a common problem.
Had mine fixed back in march, dealer replaced rack bushings and torques everything down to spec and not a single noise since

If it happened all the sudden, it is probably the outer tie rod end. I've replaced 3 on mine and it sounds like a rusty gate hinge being opened quickly. $25 part from Ford.

I'd agree with Scotty here - this sounds like tie rod ends.

My Sons' 04 GT did the same thing on the passenger side, we thought the worst that it would be the rod ends. When we jacked it up I found I could make the noise by putting force on the rack by pushing on it. The noise had sounded like it was coming from the rod end while the car was on the ground but when up in the air that was not so.

All I done to fix it was take out the rack bolt on that side and put some grease on the spacer, bolt and mounting washer and retorqued the nut and bolt. That fixed it and while it was up in the air I did the other side too just incase it decided to start making the noise. I would think since yours has such low miles that could be all it is. It's worth a try before spending the bucks on ball joints.
