steering shaft too short

I replaced the steering rack and rebuilt the rag joint with the dorman kit and the steering shaft is too short to go back on the rack and I double checked the rack and it is the correct pn what did I do wrong

The steering shaft is collapsible, put vice grips on the end, tap with a hammer and it should extend out again.

There shouldn't be a problem if your rack is mounted exactly where it was before, but in any case, if you really need to, spray some penetrating oil up into the shaft. Wait for a while, then pry it out. They're stubborn sometimes.
