I had my manual steering box rebuilt, which required me to pull the whole damn thing out, no rag joint. Anyway, after re-installing it, everything was fine, but after a while, the bearing or sleeve or whatever must have slipped down too far or something, because now the steering wheel moves around. What exactly am I missing?

Either a bushing or the spring that pushes it down. There is a bushing that is tapered, and a spring that goes on just before you install the wheel. I left out the spring and had the same problem. The bushing work out and slop suddenly appeared.
