Steering wheel won't quit honking

When I turn my wheel, the horn likes to honk. This has been a chronic problem with my car, and I've had it repaired (adjusted, really) any number of times by a guy I definitely trust knows what he's doing, so here's my question:

If I buy a lecarra or grant wheel and the adapter to mount it, will I no longer have to deal with the weird electrical setup in the steering wheel, and be able to use their solid state electronics instead? Or am I going to have to end up replacing the steering column as well? Has anyone had good or bad experiences with either of these?

You will still have the small horn contact in your colume. this is mounted in the turn signal cam assembly. The new Grant or other brand wheel will use the contact. Check it when you have the wheel off, they do ware out, I think you have to buy the whole turn signal cam assembly though, available a mustang parts stores and still available at Napa and through the HELP line like at PEP-Boys

Yeah, I've already gone through that whole process myself... I'm just hoping that the newer wheel will not be sensitive to the adjustment of the wheel so I don't end up with the same problem, just a new wheel.

pardon me if im wrong here but i dont think the horn switch is mounted in the coloum im pretty sure its mounted on the steering wheel isnt it???? I had a grant steering wheel on my 70 and there were foam pads between the contacts in the center of the wheel, it worked fine..... I say pull your stock one apart yourself and take a look, theres always a way to fix it, post up some pics and we can help you all aswell..

The problem with the Grant setup, is that over time, the foam pads can fall out or become crushed from useage and the horn plates will make contact and ...........guess what???? Horn honks when you don't want it to.

Its just a foam spacer, not to hard to replace if and when it does wear out, hell get some denser foam and put it in there if you like...


if its such a big deal wire the horn up to a momentary switch on the dash somewhere..

Oh there are repairs, it's just that it is a bad (cheap) design.

This problem will occur when the Contacts are dry,
a dab of grease on them and around the contact ring on the wheel will cure it.

obviously your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing or he wouldn't have had to keep trying to fix it.

Anyway, yes, he lubed the contacts up last time and that cured it for a while, but I think it shouldn't have to be oiled every 3 months, that has to be a signifier of a deeper problem. What kind of grease works well?

First Clean the contacts and ring, check for Burrs.
Sand with a Nail file if needed.
Then use some white lithium grease on a Q-tip and coat the buttons and ring.
(not a large gob eather)

the sheer age and technology of these vehicles is gonna give each and every car its own little characteristic quarks, really if a dab of grease on the horn buttun every 3 months keeps things inline............well.........

Not that I think this is the problem, but I have a grounding problem with my horn on my '65 coupe. The only time it will honk is if I push the clutch pedal to the floor.

before you go checking all this electrical stuff, you might want to make sure you don't have a goose stuck in your dashboard.
