86 Electric 4 cyl tank to mechanical fuel pump?

My 86 was converted to a 302 by an unknown previous owner. It has an electric pump and its running a Edelbrock carb, fed through a pressure regulator.
I want to run a mechanical pump for simplicity and need to know how to get the fuel pick up from the tank the correct way. I'm not sure I can find a stock carbed tank in the area and know that would be the easiest route.

i carbed my 86 GT and have dealt with this before. here is the scoop.

ford lists the sending units as 83-86. to get your gas guage to work properly, you have to use that sending unit. when my tank baffle broke loose and was sliding around the tank, i took the whole tank out and replaced it with one from an 87-93 car. the wiring for the guage will plug into the later style sending unit, but it will read improperly. at full tank, your guage will read empty and will slowly move up until you are empty and it reads 3/4 tank full. so to keep it where everything works for your car, you need a complete 83-86 tank.

you COULD drop your tank, pull out the pump and gut it and put it back in the tank and then run your mechanical pump. thats the down and dirty (and cheap) way to do it. as long as there is no restriction left in the pump body, the mechanical pump wont care that it is pulling fuel through the electric pump body. id leave the wiring to the pump unplugged too when you reassemble it
