Broke
Yesterday I was screwing around and worked the brakes fairly hard (all at the track of course), and was very suprised at how quickly the stock brakes faded to nothing. They smelled pretty good and smoked a little when I finally stopped, but it only took braking a couple of times from high speed before they were all done. I was surprised at how crap they are if you really get on them.

Heh, yeah, they're not real great. I've hit 120 a few times and went to hit the brakes to slow down, sometimes having to slow down a bit more than I prepared for, and it feels like your pumping away at nothing.

Stock brakes are pretty bad. Out of all the cars I've driven for a while (geo prizm, chevy s-10, ford explorer, honda prelude, and chevy camaro) the GT has had the worst braking. Is upgrading to cobra brakes a good way to fix this?

Yep, they suck, two ABS full stops is what it takes to make them fade... At the track they work fine though.. A pad upgrade might be a first option. I'll be looking on to EBC greenstuff when the time comes..

Funny you bring this up.... a few weeks ago I went to the mountains to fish, and enjoyed some of the nice "twisteeez" on the way home, coming back DOWN off the mountain.

Damn things faded so fast I was stunned. I had some dipstick in a CTS behind me trying to keep up...so I of course had to lose him. But when I was going about 55-60 heading down to a hairpin, I got on the binders, and it was like nothing. I put the stinkin pedal to the floor and thankfully got it slowed down enough to just get around the curve with a slight squeal of tires.

:nonono:

The 99+ GT brakes aren't that bad. Try driving a stock Fox beforehand. Talk aboiut bad brakes.

I have the Cobra 13" brakes on my LX along with rear disks. Let me tell you no better feeling in the world that never having to find the limits of your brakes.

I'm planning the Cobra upgrade on my GT soon as well

I'm shopping for brakes myself because mine have gone south.
I'll admit that for 'normal' driving the stock brakes work just fine. But who drives a GT 'normal'? So now I'm looking to upgrade.

Another curious thing is that I keep having dreams about driving my Mustang and the brakes fail.

I was pretty worried when my brakes did nothing while trying to stop from over 100mph. I've faded my brakes to nothing on my GT and even on my ZX2 beater before. I agree with you tho... I drive my car like I stole it, I have 1/2 a ton of coke in the back, and the cops are on my ass.
 I'm in such a good mood tonight.

I drive my car pretty hard, I floor it a lot, but I rarely have to get on the brakes hard. I just don't do around other cars where I need to brake. I coast back to a normal speed.
