Stock Flexplate on 67 289?

Hi. Need to replace my flexplate, a couple of teeth are going bad. How do I find out which type I have, without actually taking it apart and counting teeth? The car is completely stock, nothing added or deducted. All help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

so do you have a c4 then im assuming or a 3 or 4 speed? i always confuse flywheel and flexplate. small block motor? if it is a c4 auto, probably a 158 tooth 10.5 inch pattern 28oz. flexplate. look to see if you dipstick goes into the pan of case of the transmission. if its in the case, the above will work. if its in the pan, u need a 164 tooth flexplate with 28oz. balance with a different converter bolt pattern. if you have a manual, scratch what i just said and someone else will reply.
 
C4 Auto

It's a C4 auto. Have seen 157/160/164 teeth on various sites and newsgroups. Mostly 157, in some cases 164. It seems they don't have the same bolt pattern to the crank, and also there seems to be some different kind of starters (I have a 2-bolt) so it's kind of important to get it right....I'll check according to what you wrote above. Thanks.

He's got a 157 tooth- 28oz/in balance flexplate, unless someone's swapped the original C-4. All small block flywheels/flexplates use the same bolt pattern at the crank. Be it from the 221 to the 400M. All small block starters use two bolts to bolt to the bellhousing. If he happens to have an FMX in there,( or as 84convertiblegt said above a case fill C-4) then he's got a 164 tooth flexplate.
 
If you have any doubts as to which flexplate you have, the easiest thing to do is pull off the small inspection plate at the lower front part of the bellhousing and count the teeth as you rotate the engine by hand.It is possible that you have a 160 tooth flexplate, I pulled a C-4 out of a 67 Cougar that had a 160 tooth flexplate.I counted the teeth a couple of times as I thought I was going crazy as I had never heard of one before but I found out afterwards that they were used on some vehicles in 1967 only.Supposedly the 157 teeth flexplates will interchange fine with the 160 tooth ones but I never tried.

I can back this up. My '68 came with a C4 and I was bored so I decided to count the teeth. I also questioned my sanity when I came with only 160. I even counted again, marking every 10th tooth....still 160 and 16 evenly spaced marks. Thing is, my '68 was manufactured in December '67.

Anyway, count the teeth you'll be fine.
