stock gearing

please bear with me a bit.... new to mustangs and still trying to gather intelligent information.

I purchased my '01 Cobra on Monday. I was under the impression that all mustangs came with 3.27 gears from the factory. I ran all the ratios through a gearing calculator and came up with that I 'should' have 3.55 gears in the rear-end. Now I am reading in threads here that the '03's have 3.55's. Do all Cobras come with 3.55's? I was told that NO work has been done to this car, but I do know it was ordered by the first owner, not just bought off a lot.

'96 - '01s came with 3.27s and '03/'04 came with 3.55s from the factory. There were no "gear ring" options from the factory either (unlike the older days), if that was something you were curious about.

thanks..... yes, I was wondering if it had been ordered with 3.55's. so either one of the previous two owners did tear into the rear-end or some of my input into the calculator was wrong. guess I'll have to jack it up and count the axle rotations...... *sigh* I was hoping it was stock.

for some reason my 98 sits at 3000 rpms at 80mph in 5th. seems a little high. havent put the 4.10s in yet, probably next week. i should do the driveshaft check myself.

The 03-04's come stock with 3.55's. Not positive about the earlier models. Possibly 3.27's like you said.

The stock tach is usually a few RPM off...I know mine is about 200rpm off because I've set my shift light for 3000rpm and revved it up and it doesn't come on until my tach reads about 3200rpm...

The only real way to tell what rearend gear you have is to jack up the rear end, put the car in neutral, mark the driveshaft with a marker, spin the rear wheels one full revolution and count how many times the axle goes around...if it goes around 3 1/4 times you have the stock 3.27's, 3 1/2 times 3.55's, just over 4 times 4.10's, etc...

And unless your speedo is corrected for the gears, all the online gear calculators won't do squat for you to figure out what gears you have...
