Trav, I'd chat with one of the gurus - Mike (Thumper460). He can tell you pricing and what to expect. He has a good bit of info on his site too as I recall (note: it's been some years since I read his site).

There are some guys making some nice power with his ported E7's. But some nice alum heads have the benefit of helpin with the ping-thing (not much of a consideration for fox III's, which seems to be one of Mike's main audiences).

Good luck bud.

E7's can provide a lower cost option for more power

I'm gonna cut to the chase this time

Your power expectations
or
Your money spent on them

If either one of them climbs too high

They cease to be a viable mod IMHO

Take it from someone who has been down that road

I got a little bit of info about .............
my self ported E7 head combo on my site if you care to look

I'd tell you to ...........
Really think about what you want before you go in that direction
because
for me ... they just did not deliver enough go fast

It's been a while since I looked at Thumper's site, but if I remember correctly he says ported e7's will outperform stock gt-40 heads. But ported gt-40's will easily outperform the ported e7's. It takes a LOT of work to get the gt-40's up to 300rwhp, where a good set of aftermarket heads will put you right around that 300hp mark right out of the box.

see if you could find some gt40's for a decent price. i paid about $900 for my heads, cam, rockers, and intake. that is including $80 for shipping the heads and $180 machine shop bill. the heads were tanked, got a valve job, and resurfaced. just get a nitrous kit

I'd recommend a set of 185's for a 347.

I've got really worked over e7's on my 347 in my capri... but I wouldnt go that route. If I did it all over again, I'd go with 185's or gt-40x.

I can see the AFR 185's

but

I've always seen GT40x heads as an Aluminum version of GT40/40p's
thus
Way too small for a 347 Stroker

Grady, the GT40Y's were the aluminum version of the GT40 iron heads found on the stock cobra's. The GT40X's were different and had a lot of improvements over the typical GT40Y/GT40. Its been too long for me to remember what exactly was changed, but they did have added improvements over the others in the GT40 family. I do agree that they are small for a 347 though!

IMO playing with the stock E7 heads is a waste of time and money for most guys. It all depends on what you want though.

The GT40 Y303 heads are not just an aluminum version of the GT40 cast iron heads. They flow better. The GT40 X303/X305 flow even better than the Y303 heads. FRPP advertises the Y303 as a 40hp gain of stock heads. I can say that they definately do deliver. I ran on average .4sec faster in the 1/4 mile with just the head swap. I won't say that the Y303 heads are the best because they are not. But, for the budget minded the Y303 heads are a good choice over any GT40 cast iron heads or even ported E7TE heads for the price.

Hey Paul

Thanks for the info

Being as you put it that way, seems as if I do remember it like that
and
I wanna associate the phrase "Turbo Swirl" with the GT40x head

I still think those heads aren't in the same category as
the heads of today such as TFS, Edel's, AFR and the like

Adam

I just love those sayings we used to hear from our Grandparents

My GrandMaw would have said something along the lines of .......

Grady,

Turbo Swirl is associated to the Y303 heads.

Turbo Swirl 'Extra performance' are the X303/305 variety.

I will agree that the FRPP GT40 aluminum heads are dated.

The new FRPP Z304 heads (not a GT40) will perform with today's aftermarket offerings.

If you can get the heads for cheap then yes. $700 or less for a set is what I would expect to pay. They are on par with the aluminum GT40 heads as far as flow goes. They flow less on the intake but a little better on the exhaust according to the head flow chart in the 'sticky' thread.
