Stock Hood Question

I just wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this. I'm stationed in Germany and when I get over 110mph on the autobahn my hood starts to vibrate pretty bad. I don't know if it's the wind bowing the hood or if it's just play in the hood latch. I was thinking of getting an aftermarket fiberglass hood but afraid of it shattering under the same conditions.

my stock hood was shaking really badly over like 80 so i got rid of it and got a kanen fiberglass hood. it looks great, but it has the same problem, even worse though. now i am looking into getting hood pins

I run the autobahn at 130-140 mph as well and my hood shakes, s did the hood on my former '97. You can try to adjust those rubber bumper stops under the the hood, but the best way is to install hood pins. No way it will fly open with those.

In theory, had I been driving down a smooth highway at 110, I wouldn't notice any excessive hood shaking. Being a V6 my car is governed at 112, so I theoretically wouldn't be able to go any faster. Of course living in CA and having no Autobahn to test that theory on, I wouldn't know for sure. Honest.

Being in cali dont mean you cant go over 140mph ;-) I just would not do it for a long time..hahaha. The autobahn is much thicker and well maintained then our crappy roads that they rape us over taxes. Thats why they can drive that speed and not worry too much. The funning thing is they have least fatal accidents ..haha.. this place blows

I have both hood pins & hood struts. I've read that someone with just the hood struts said it stop shaking? I can't say as I have both and no problems for me. Here are the hood struts I bought:

Mine shakes starting around 70 and on bumpy roads. The dealer adjusted the rubber bumpers and so did I later, but it still shakes. It looks like its a design problem from Ford in that they didn't use any stiffeners under the hood.

I have the Redline Tuning hood struts and the hood still shakes at 75-80mph. I witnessed the hood shack yesterday on my first road trip down I95. Of course the wind was blowing 30+ mph so this may have helped with the hood shake. Coming back same cruise speed on I95 with the wind was behind me the hood shook very little.
This car pulls a lot of air up under the front and into the engine bay. This seems to cause an increase in air pressure under the hood. It seems that if the air could be vented the hood would be fine, just a thought.

This is a problem that many others have had...strong wind gusts and passing trucks also makes it worse..
I plan on replaceing my hood and installing hood pins.

Thanks for the feedback, I am wanting to get a hood like on the shelby. I think it's the pressure under the hood doing the vibrating. With functional vents on a shelby hood I think it will be ok but hood pins might be next on my shopping list.
I don't know how you cruiz the autobahn at 130-140, above 120mph it feels like I'm driving a hovercraft.

Doesn't bother me at all, actually the car is pretty stable. I drove the Croatian autobahn just last weekend 410 KM @ 120-MAX and car drove great.

If you read the Motor Trend article on the Shelby GT500, they specfically mention the hood louvres being necessary due to excessive pressure building under the hood at high speeds. Sounds like Ford knows they have this problem on the Mustang

I agree. Either louvers or some sort of rear vents would probably solve the problem.

Froridabob, i think the rear vent idea is good. Lets see if the after market comes up with something that doesn't look cheesy. The air at high speeds needs a way to get from under the hood, and rear vents in that black plastic area would work. Start marketing.................

There are hot air exaust hoods out there already. I don't know if they're functional or not. Maybe if someone has one they can let us know if it solved the problem.

Looks like the 3D Carbon hood is vented to let the air out. Not a bad looking hood either.

I was thinking a louver installation in the cowl area of the hood. In the black plastic area infront of the wiper assembly. Since the hood on these cars are raised up, there is about 3 1/2+" there to install some kind of air vent. Let me know what you think? Would in vent enough air to prevent hood shake?

Anybody see the Grand Am race at Sebring on SPEED CHANNEL? the winning '05 Mustang blew its hood OFF an a high speed straight It had FOUR hood pins across the front of a stock looking hood!

this seems like a universal design problem with the "underbite" design of the '05's nose, air gets under and lifts, but I think I will deal with it because a aero nose would just killl the clasic good looks of this car.

could also be it just is not designed correctly IE. lightweight hood, flimsy hinges, week latch, who knows we may find a TSB or worse a recall in future on this, It has been an issue on all other major forums
