Stock muffler surgery

Does anyone have a internal diagram of the stock mufflers?


I just picked up a new set of stock mufflers (cheap) and I want to cut into them, gut'em, and weld'em back up. Should be the equivalent to SLP loudmouths,,yes?

Any feedback, ideas, or wisecracks would be appreciated.

If you gut em, and weld in a pipe to connect the inlet to the outlet....

Funny you should ask. I had the same thoughts to save money.(I spend way to much on cars and then sell them for the newest mustangs every time they make them better). I had a set of stockers off my wifes 06 GT and thought I would use them to gut out and try on my 07 GT. (no big lose if it didn't work, the wife likes her JBA's better any how). The stock mufflers are a maze of resriction but easy to remove, and it sounded alot better w/ no drone but it still didn't have the muscle tone I was wanting so I went to a exhaust shop(exhaust special-T's) and for 50 bucks they made me a set of 3" pipes and it sounds purfect now. (verse's $450 for SLP's). OK they are not stainless but they will still last as long as I will owe the car. On my 07 the exit pipes(tips) were smaller dia. too. But to gut them I used a 14" metal blade on my sawsall to do the cross cut(muffler body ONLY, 2 layers), a metal cutting disc on my 4" grinder for the long cut (you only need to cut one side and bend open the top like a soup can) and a 6" metal blade to cut the 2 pipes inside to remove the baffling. it was kind of tricky cutting the to pipes inside, my son held the muffler on the work bench and I had to hold the sawsall from hitting the cutting table on the saw and keep the tip of the blade from hitting the muffler case that I didn't cut to keep its shape. It sound like more work then it was but weld it up and you WILL like it I'll bet. I still have the baffling for conversation sake so I'll try to get you some pictures.

P.S. The muffler shop welded the stock tips on the pipes they made me and it still looks stock.

Im glad to see im not the only one who had that idea! but i ended up just cutting the muffler and bent and welded in a straight peice of pipe, and the sound is identicle to the slp's

Muffler dissection..Muuahhh!!!!

Mufflers ready for the plasma torch! Two skins to remove. First muffler took two cuts, second took one with the torch turned up. On the second pic the inlet is on the upper left and outlet on the lower right.

I cut out the baffle plate and a large notch out of the outlet tube. The outlet tube has an outer skin and an inner baffle. Cuts right out.

Tomorrow I will re-skin them.

I am trying to round up a decent recorder to get before and after audio clips.

The results of your "Finished" mufflers looks similar to what the "Flow-Tech" axleback exhaust design is(NOT FLOWMASTER). Jegs has them $189

You did it different then I did, I totally gutted mine.

I did mine the lazy way. I called brenspeed and ordered the pypes violator axel back kit for $199 shipped...... yay me

Well I tig welded 'em up this afternoon and installed them.

Best $100 I have spent on the car!

Now if I can sell my mufflers (700mi) for $50 then it will be the best $50 I have spent!

Sorry to bring back a dead thread, but i don't have the tools to gut the mufflers myself. Do you think i could find a muffler shop that would do it, and about how much would it cost, and would a shop even do something like this.

Anyone with a plasma torch can do the gut in about 15 minutes. Tig welding them back up takes a bit longer.

Without tools you are probably out of luck as I doubt a shop would do it cheaper than slp loudmouths or straight pipes.

Thanks, I know a guy that has a sawsall, so i could probably gut them myself. However, I would have to get the pipe welded inside the muffler, and the skin welded back together. You might not know the answer, but would that be more expensive than just getting some slps.
