Strange grinding issue from starter

A 1991 Mustang GT
The starter works fine, does not grind and the motor makes only normal noises when the distributor electrical plug is out. When connected, the starter grinds. How could this electrical connection cause an issue with the starter???

Timing, if your distributer is locked out lets say, and you have too much timing while cranking you can have all sorts of problems.

is could be pulling a load and not giving the starter enough juice? im kinda confused on what your asking
