well,

The previous owner said it was a 69 block with a roller cam in it. I get underneath the car and the engine block is stamped E7TE. That designates it as a late model roller block as far as I know. Well, I pull the intake off today....Usually there is an XXX stamped in the oil valley of these late model blocks. This one is stamped simply.... 5.0

There was no spyder, no roller lifters, and no dog bones. Im sure there is a roller cam in there because it is indeed a roller block and the seller went out of his way to tell me it had a roller cam.

My question is....I have never seen an E7TE block that has not been stamped XXX. Has anyone else?

I'm not sure about the block but I would say with rather high confidence that you do not have a roller cam in that block. It sounds like a truck block that will have a large base circle flat tappet cam in it.

There were many non roller cam equipped roller blocks in pickups. Nothing unusual. As for the casting marks in the lifter valley, nothing that you find there would surprise me.

so even if my block is stamped e7te, it doesnt necessarily mean its a roller block? There are holes tapped where the spyder should be in the lifter valley

The block could be set up for a roller, but not have one installed. If you tried to run the roller lifters with no dog bones, the lifters would be destroyed in a very short amount of time.

Third letter T designates that it is indeed a truck block. Always has.

No...that is what I was telling you earilier but I was not clear. If you ran non-roller lfters on a roller cam you would destroy both rather quickly.

No, but a flat tappet cam can be run in roller cam block. You have a late 80's block. All 5.0 blocks are the same in the late 80's. Have you mesured the pushrods? Roller cam push rods a significantly shorter than flat tappet pushrods. That's a simple trick to ID an engine as having a roller cam.

i will measure the pushrods when i get home. However, seeing that there is no spyder, and no dogbones, I doubt that there is a roller cam. I sill measure and post my findings when i get home.

On the flip side, everything looks new under the covers and in the oil valley. All of the gaskets have been replaced, there is no gunky oil or burnt oil clumps anywhere. So, thats good news.

Third letter Z is mustang.

Here's a website that helps to translate numbers from Ford Parts.

Yea, all the H.O's and pickup/van motors used the same heads ( and blocks too) Just the pickup/van motors didn't get the same cam and pistons that the H.O.'s got.

Roller 5.0 pushrods are 6.25 inches long. Yuo do have a roller block, even though there was a flat tappet cam installed in there.
