Strange sound from under the hood

I noticed last night that when my car idles there is a faint random popping sound coming from under the hood. Its almost like a really quiet backfire. Anyone know what that could be?

Its not a ticking sound like an exhaust leak. It almost sounds like a misfire but the car runs great.

Well.. if it turns into a loud knocking sound then you have problems... that's what my car started doing today ... It turns out I spun a bearing when I started my car

+1 on checking the spark plugs... Just a though since its random and at idle but maybe your IAC is about to take a dump...

Im planning on replacing my IAC because of my random hard starting problem but didnt know if it could be related.

check your plugs right away. Don't even drive the car untill you check them. it might not be it but just before they let go you can get a sound like that from the loose plug..

I checked the plugs and they were all tight. I think its going to be IAC time soon. The dealer wanted over $100 for it though!

just get one from Autozone. Not sure why people drop $100 for a part that is imfamous for failing...

i had what could be what youre referring to.

it sounds like a low deep bass hit, or like a bubble rising and popping on the surface of a pool. mine was coming from the stock airbox. a CAI cured that.

I also had that same sound coming from the passenger side of my motor and I had the head replaced due to a worn valve guide which caused the valve to bend and stick. The sound that it made was a type of hollow knock or echo through the valve cover and the intake. Truely a weird sound, Ford fixed it free, hope that is not what is coming from yours.

You might want to check and see if your MAF sensor needs cleaned. I was
having a problem with my car missing a little at idle. It turned out some oil from
my K&N had collected on my sensor. I just cleaned it off with a q-tip and some
alchohol and it was fine after that. Might work for you too.

You can hear it out the back at the exhaust tips too.

Ill have to check my MAF. I wonder why changing the CAI fixed it for thomas91169?

when I had a plug loose, you could hear that cylinder misfiring just by the sound of the exhaust, and it was a steady pop pop pop in the exhaust
