Strange Starting Delay

After turning the ignition key to start the car, there is absolute silence for about 2-3 seconds, then it starts as normal. The starter solenoid relay is about 1 year old, and the starter is about 2 yrs old. I have not yet checked the battery voltage, but the motor starts quickly once the delay is over. Any ideas?

I'd vote for the solenoid, it'd be a cheap fix to try.

check your ignition switch. mine just took a crap in my 66 falcon.

I'd vote for a $10 voltmeter from Radio Shack, a few alligator clips, and do some real testing. Or for some real sparking fun, hot-wire it at the solenoid and see if you still get the delay.

i've heard of something like this that is very common on big blocks and may actually be built in IIRC. i'll see if i can find the info on this.

i think its the battery or starter solenoid

found it, there was a delay built in for the 68.5 CJ cars and it's possible that it amy have been mistakenly installed in your car as well. here's a good read on the subject

I'd try bypassing the ignition to see if it does it also. Give you a better idea of where it could be coming from.

Sure wish I had the '68 CJ Big Block. However its just a garden variety 289. Tonight I'll try replacing the started solenoid relay. I looked at the ignition switch and it looks tough to replace as the dash curls under below the switch. I'll look at the shop manual to see if it describes replacement.

Another vote for ignition switch... my car started doing something like this just before the switch gave out completely.

Replaced the 1 year old, $25, Made in USA starter solenoid switch last night with a new $10 Chinese knock off. Problem solved.
