Looking for a little guidence or input on what i should do to my rear. Go ahead and get out your hate if you want but I am building a LQ4 turbo setup for my 87 notch. Its going to put down probably around 750whp on medium boost levels and up too 1000HP on high boost through a TH400 with a brake. This car is a street car that i run at track sometimes. So im debating on what rear to go with. I know i want to stay 8.8. But do i really need a spool? Or is there something like a detroit locker be better for me? Any input is helpful

I'd do a 9" with this housing.

Team Z Mustang Bolt-in Ford 9" Housing

If you can do the work yourself, weld up the 8.8, put 9" ends on it and call it a day. If you have to pay someone to do the work on it, it will get expensive quick and probably only be a couple hundred cheaper than the 9"

I have heard mixed things about spools on the street, some guys say they are fine, but i was just talking to a friend of mine with a malibu that is pretty fast and has a spool, he dosent drive the car on the street much anymore cause he hates the spool(and the price of race fuel). He was telling me any kind of imperfections in the road are really magnified by the spool and it pulls left or right all the time.

I don't have any experience with high hp numbers like that, but I do have experience with a spool in a street car. I lasted 2 weeks with it, and 1 of those weeks was waiting for a frpp trac lok diff to come in. IMHO, it sucked. Hard to turn, don't even think of making a tight turn. Clicking and clunking at parking lot speeds just takin it easy. With the new diff in there I notice no 1 wheel peel, it's instant point and counter steer, haha. I only put 2000kms a summer on it and 1 km with a spool on the street is too much for me. Track car go for it.

Yea spool would be my last choice for sure, anyone have experience with a high HP differential ? That will take a beating on track and be somewhat road friendly. Reason im not going 9" is honestly trying to save a few dollars if possible. Our 89 Notch has been in 7s with 8.8 in it but it has a spool.

8.8 33 spline or bigger spool and id think about 5/8 studs. I don't mind the spool at all.

I'm a strong proponent of Strange Engineering They carry everything you need, and they offer the parts separately or assembled into the housing.

Don't forget some good quality control arms. At your power level, you should use spherical bearings all the way around on the rear suspension.

Yea we generally run strange axles in our cars so im with you on that for sure. I plan on running team z upper and lower control arms. Still debating on doing "stock suspension" coilovers for the rear. I am running 275/60/15 Mickeys DR...
