just snapped mine, looked aftermarket. does a tremec need a different cable? looked the same to me. thanks

The OEM cable is the strongest. Buy from Ford or Maximum Motorsport. Those are the two vendors that I'm aware of.

I run an OEM 94/95 cable for additional header clearance.

Yes... it's longer by at least 6 inches. Maybe a little more. I have it routed along the frame rail on the driver side, down infront of the power steering resevoir, through the k-member and back to the tranny.

It's nice having it totally out of the way.

thats what i thought, with longtubes should i go with the 94-95? i also have a D&Dtubular K, what would you suggest?

Yep... with longtubes, I would DEFINITELY go with the longer cable. If you already have an aftermarket quadrant and FW adjuster then I'd order from MM. They have them pre-modified (I think they refer to it as their "universal" cable). It's the same oem cable only the tabs are precut.

Any cable you buy should last a very long time... if you install it correctly. Where did your old cable snap? Near the quadrant or out in the engine bay? I'll bet it was near the quadrant because you didn't have it adjusted correctly. I'll bet you are one of these guys that likes the clutch to grab just as the pedal comes off the floor, right? Not a good idea, it should grab about half way up. That way there is no slack in the cable and it is always in the groove of the quadrant. If there is slack in the cable, it will jump out of the groove and wear quickly and eventually snap. If it snapped out in the engine bay, then you had it routed close to something that rubbed through it. All you guys snapping cables are doing it to yourselves... a properly adjusted cable will last 15+ years... none of us have a clutch heavy enough to snap a cable unless its rubbing against something or not stayin in the quadrant groove... it's just that simple. On a side note, I have seen defective cables that the ends pop off... that is unavoidable and should be returned to the manufacturer for a replacement.

This is simply not true. The parts store cables are junk, plain and simple. If you get a full months worth out of them…consider yourself lucky. I broke two of them, each within 1 hour of installing on the stock setup. The first one simply bound while the other broke the plastic ferrule at the bellhousing as soon as I pushed it in.

The only reliable cables will be genuine OEM replacement cables. I however had have great luck lately with the adjustable ford racing cable. It's been holding up just fine even with the high underhood temps I have.

Ditto. Many aftermarket cables use either single strand cable or cable with larger but low strand counts. This will make them stiff and more likely to bind as a result of bending they have to do fro proper routing.

They are also guilty of using inferior material to line the cable casing, causing the liners to deteriorate and chaff through or or even melt alltogether.

+1 for the Maximum motorsports cable. i run this on my 95. already snapped two cables: "stock replacement" ones. ran a hays cable for a while ( which is too short for 94/95 cars but advertises 79-04 ) and felt very ratchety. swapped over to a MM cable and am very pleased. plenty of header clearance and the cable swap alone improved pedel feel alot, very smooth. OEM ford cables from the dealer are way pricey. go MM

That pretty much sums it up altogether. The MM kit is a very nice kit though so i would opt for that one myself, but i'm wondering if you called them up if they would put together a kit using the '94-95 cable for the extra header clearance...because i run the same thing, it's almost mandatory with full lengths.

first of all don't generalize I DID NOT install it, the previous owner did. i follow directions. however that idiot didnt even put the pins back in for the quadrant!! But honestly, the aftermarket cable he had looked inferior compared to the oem one i had on my last '89

I am in the same boat as a lot of you guys concerning clutch cables. Last year we installed the 5.0resto Steeda clutch quadrant/cable/FWA. Just last month the outer sheath self-destructed and left me stranded since the inner cable bound up tight. Had to get towed home. Needed something quick, so got the Advance Auto Parts replacement cable made by Zoom. Only a couple weeks of use and I can already feel it either stretching or rubbing because shifting is getting harder and harder. I have adjusted the FWA to all possible extremes, but I can tell it's the cable.
Just ordered the MM replacement cable last night. I agree with everyone about the auto store specials...not worth the trouble.
And yes, I know how to install everything. I installed the exact same setup (except with a Ford cable) in my 93 and it shifted great for 4 years. There IS a difference.
