stuck gauges

in my 01 GT, I have the temp and fuel gauge's not working. Sometimes, if I hit a bump, they may start to work again. With the fuel gauge, if it's above 1/2 tank, it'll show full; below 1/2 shows empty.

The temp gauge went about 2 years ago... no problem as I have a scangauge II. The fuel gauge quite maybe a year ago.

I took the gauge pod apart, hit the internals with compressed air etc but no joy. I've read on the older models, you can replace the stepper motor behind the gauge. It looks fairly straightforward, I just need to know if anyone else has done this and if so, where can I find them? I've searched, but can't find the ones like what I have (metal, not plastic)

Just so that I'm on the same game page, have you confirmed the grounds from the Cluster? There are two. Wire color black and BK/WH. Best to measure the resistance back to a known good ground (battery negative best). Should be low.

Have you access the cluster diagnostics? Any information? I'm interested in know what the logic "thinks" the sesnor input is. This will confirm if the problem is external or internal to the cluster.

Sure would be a shame to replace/repair the cluster only to end up with the same problem.

Has any work been done on the fuel tank? Any damage to the fuel tank sender?
