anyone have any tricks to removing a stuck intake maifold? I am tearing down the engine and this thing feels like its glued on. I got it to slide around on the top of the lower maifold but it is stuck and doesnt want to come off. I have a nice coat of PB blaster around it that im letting soak on it over night to see what happens. Any ideas?

Make absolutely sure you have all the bolts out of it!

Check in a manual to see if you have them all.

Other that that, sometimes it will hang up on the inside edges of the valvecovers.

Be careful so that you don't break something.

dead blow hammer can come in handy......a couple of light smacks should free-it up.

ya I live in ashland mass, and work in the next town over (framingham)
how about you?


I tried knocking it loose with a hammer but it is still stuck like a magnet

You mean it slides from side to side but won't lift up? Maybe you missed a bolt, or there may be some sealant snugging it down, or most likely it's trapped under the valve covers.

never seen a stock lower get stuck under stock valve covers. Take the thermostat out and stick a broom handle in the hole and just pry it up. dont use metal tho it could bend or crack the manifold.

Take a razor blade and cut the sealant in the front and if you can the back of the manifold.Get a rubber mallet and pound it,pull up firm and fast.Repeat.Sould come off.
Work for me every time,and once I had to take on and off the manifold twice in a day.

I'm confused on this - Are we talking about a upper or lower intake manifold being stuck?

If it is the lower intake it literally should be glued on (silicone) and check under the heater core hose strap that bolts down to the passenger side of the lower intake. There are two connections. One bolt straps the strap down and then there is one underneath it (a stud)...

If it is the upper intake some people have a bracket on the back of their intake that trys to hold it down...and again check all bolts to see if they are removed. Did you remove all the hoses from the upper intake (underneath it and behind it) The PCV valve hose is a good example of one that would cause you to move it around and not remove it...

Is this the part that is confusing everyone?
Becuase it confused me too.

sorry if I was unclear, I am talking about the upper manifold and what I was saying about the sliding is that I can get it (the upper) to slide around on top of the lower but they wont actually come apart at all.

I would think if the two bolts under the cover were still bolted down you wouldn't be able to move it. That is a good point though.

So which way can you pivot the upper intake. Is the front sliding out or the back. Is the middle part not moving...etc...?

just sounds like all the vacuum lines and throttle cables under the manifold are real tight from being on so long. Just make sure you have everything disconnected.

I remember reading about a bracket under the upper manifold that most people toss after it has been off the first time.
Check under the manifold, see if there is anything attached. Also look around the valve covers to see if there are any brackets around there too.

I have an 88 LX that I tore down Saturday and I cant think of anything that would allow it to move but not lift. The upper to lower gasket usually doesnt hold the two together unless someone put RTV or somkething in there. Try looking in the front and rear of the intake on the drivers side and make sure you got all the hoses that connect underneath. Theyre rubber so they could allow it to move a little but not lift. Theres one that runs from the passenger side of the engine that hung me up at first. Too bad my cars out of commission or Id come take a look at it too. I tore off my upper, lower and both heads to clean and regasket. It started out as just a mission to replace the valve cover gaskets and lower intake gasket, next thing I knew the heads were off. Decided if I was already that far, might as well go all the way down to the cylinders. But man... do I hate walking....

Mine didnt have a bracket Im installing a Cobra set on mine. I just got in from taking off the upper. after I unbolted the 6 bolts, lines, and throttle linkage/cables, it came right off with no problems... I know its frustrating for you to keep reading this, but it really does sound like you left a bolt in somewhere, or missed disconnecting something.
Off topic, my delima is getting the freaking fuel fittings unhooked!!!! I have the tools, just cant seem to get the dang things to work

Stanglou, I didnt bring the fuel disconnect tools from my work toolbox home so I went and got a cheap pair from Advance Auto and they worked just the same. Hardest part for most people is the actual seperation of the two lines. Dont be afraid to use a pry bar once you have the tool in place to get tension off the spring. THere area couple good leverage points that you can use to seperate the lines from one another. As long as you use your head there shouldnt be a problem. All the tools do is seperate the spring from the groove in the line. After that its muscle and/or finesse to seperate them.
