86 Stang Vertable...

Pulled Codes and get the TAB, TAD and EVP solinoids. This has been a problem for some time. I just got this thing running good with the exception of this "new" problem. It may have been there all along but who knows. BTW I did a tune up when I got the car and this is a bone stock stang, right down to the air silencer.

When cold the engine idles fine. Nice and smooth and does not have this missing under WOT. After driving the car for a while and then engine warms up this problem with missing at WOT happens. I am thinking it could be the TFI or bad dizzy. My 93 had something like this and I replaced the dizzy to fix the issue only after replacing everything else, TFI, Wires, cap roter and such.

Any Ideas?

Allen

Typical problems are the TFI and PIP sensor, along with fuel delivery issues. Start by pulling the TFI and have it tested. Bring along a hair dryer to heat it up, since the common failure mode is when they get hot.

Look for codes 14, 16, & 18 when you dump codes. These are Pip or TFI related problems.

Dump the codes and see what the computer says is wrong…Codes may be present in the computer even if the Check Engine light isn’t on.

Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire or paper clip and the check engine light, or test light or voltmeter. I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

See http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/

IF your car is an 86-88 stang, you'll have to use the test lamp or voltmeter method. There is no functional check engine light on the 86-88's except possibly the Cali Mass Air cars.

Codes have different answers if the engine is running from the answers that it has when the engine isn't running. It helps a lot to know if you had the engine running when you ran the test.

Trouble codes are either 2 digit or 3 digit, there are no cars that use both 2 digit codes and 3 digit codes.

For those who are intimidated by all the wires & connections, see http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16153 for what a typical hand scanner looks like. Normal retail price is about $30 or so at AutoZone or Wal-Mart.

Or for a nicer scanner see http://www.midwayautosupply.com/pc-7208-90-equus-digital-ford-code-reader-3145.aspx – It has a 3 digit LCD display so that you don’t have to count flashes or beeps.. Cost is $30.

as I mentioned before the only codes i get are the ones I have been getting since i got this beast. They all have to do with the thermactor system and the EVP circuit. The engine when its hot will idle rough so I knows its heat related. I think I will try and get a used distribtor along with a TFI just to be sure. I may also take a stab and change the O2 sensors since this engine runs rich. BTW it is a Speed Density engine.

Thanks
