Stupid Exhaust Question...

Ok, why (technically) is it that an aftermarket X-Pipe makes so much more power than the stock H?

It can't all be due to the flow path of an X rather than H?

Is is just that and the fact that the tube is wider?

It just doesn't make sense to me, maybe because I'm tired. How terrible of an idea would it be to cut out the stock cats, get some aluminum/steel tube, bend it into the proper shape (I have access to pipe bending machines and other stuff too), weld on some cats and bolt it on? This probably sounds very stupid, but keep in mind, I'm tired and cheap. Thanks.

It doesn't make a difference that you are likely to notice. They perform roughly the same. The X gives you more up top, the H gives you more down low.

Seriously, don't bother modifying your existing H. You can pick up an o/r h for $130, shipped to your home easily. Keep the stocker if you ever sell the car or the car goes to where emissions checks are required.

Yeapers or "modify" the cats. There is more than 1 way to gut a cat. BTW it makes it sound weird.

most aftermarket mid pipes are 2 1/2" in diameter. the stock H is 2 1/4, i think. that is where the performance comes.

its not really something you will feel... but its there

you need a full exhaust from header to tip to really feel a good gain but none the less the gains are noticable its not a lot of power that you'll be like WOW but its there

x pipe has a better scavanging effect on the exhaust.

that is why it will always outperform an h-pipe or balance tube when done correctly.

now the stock pipe has 4 cats and just a balance tube.

on a completely stock car I would be a 2 1/4 inch pipe with no cats and an x crosover about 18" from the collector would out prefome a 2 1/2 pipe.

what you are talking about can be done but would be fairly time consuming and mildly expensive. the magnaflow true x is about $75 so if it took a shop 2 hrs you would be better off buying the pipe. now if you do it yourself it would be fine.

just go to a scrap yard as try to find some stainless pipe and bends. then weld it up.

The stock H on 99-04 has 2 cats in front and 2 resonators in the rear, I believe. Not 4 cats.

I can't answer that either way. I just know there are 4 devices welded in to restrict flow.

Brent has everything you need and shipped my order to me quickly. Within two days, I had my pipe installed. Ordered MILs, extensions, and the pipe on a Monday, installed Wednesday night.
