Well it's me again asking about gears... I purchased the 3.90 Pro 5.0 gears for my 03 Mustang GT Automatic... Couple questions.. What exactly will these new gears add to the performance? (Hopefully some good acceleration off the bat because I don't know if it's just me but when I floor it these stock gears just die in the beginning) Also, would an ordinary place like Midas or another car repair place be able to install these? I really don't have anyone else to turn to for installation.. I live in Ohio. Thanks guys.

chances are, if you pay the mechanic enough for a side job, they'll do anything. unfortunately, they might not do it right. and gears is a job you want done RIGHT. if i were you, snag a phonebook, and look for more contacts than just a midas, then call them and ask how proficient they sound in the area of gear installs. i had mine done at a speedshop because i am great friends with the guys who work there. anyway, gears will make you launch way better, and puts your stang better in their powerband in my opinion.

Im in ohio too! Good luck in finding a speed shop. I am going with 4.10's someday. I will have the dealer install them. I am going to buy ford racing gears. All this gear talk is on hold till the 3650 transmission is fixed.

Nice stang JRC, mines black too. I also recently just got the Stalker Body Kit installed.. well in the process as we speak being installed. After that I'm going to add a K&N Air filter, Roush Sway bar and these 3.90 gears and pray that my mechanic doesn't screw it up lol.

Hummmm, i d stay away from midas

Why dont you call a shop that sells performance parts and ask them. They sure know a place around you that can perform an installation. You dont want to mess that. Before i got my gears, i did consider 3.90 but the guys who installed mine told me that he would do it only if i get FRPP gears I think they fit with much less adjustment then other brand.

The new gears will give you much better response. I have an '03 GT AOD with 3.73 gears, and I love the extra pep. You don't get more horsepower, but it sure feels like it in your seat! But definitely agree with everbody else, get a performance shop to do it right. Also, it doesn't end there. Because of the AOD transmission, you'll need to either have them install a SpeedCal in the dash or a performance chip like Diablo to recalibrate your speedometer. Since the AOD in the '03 is electronically controlled, there's no speedo gear to switch out. The SpeedCal will run you about $250 plus install, the Diablo will run about $400 plus install. The chip is more expensive, but if you're going to do more mods, you're going to need it eventually anyway, so go ahead and spend the extra $150.

Good luck, and enjoy!

I was under the impression that a speedcal would not work on an AOD because the shift points need to be adjusted. In this case only a chip would do the job. Am I off base here?

Well, as far as not going to Midas goes.. I think I'm going to have to. I've called several different places.. even a shop close to me that had a Hot Rod in the garage.. When I ask about them being able to do gears or not they said "Yea, it's not somthing we do, but we've touched it before" Wtf does that mean anyways?

When I called Midas, the guy sounded like he knew what he was talking about as far as the oil, calibration, and others. So I think I've got no choice but to go there.. They told me I'd have to also schedule an appt. and not just bring the car in because they need to get the tools for it. Anyways.. thanks for all your help and suggestions. By the way - is a diablo chip or anything of that nature REQUIRED to get done with this job? Thanks again. Later.

My .02 for the guys talking about gears with the Automatic. Cant say about the SpeedCal for Autos or the Diablo chips. BUT

I have done some searches recently about the SuperChips tuners, and all i seem to see is the guys with the Autos, and they are all very pleased with the big improvement in shifting, etc. and of course the tuner will adjust your speedo after the gear install. Hope this helps.

You're completely right!

I wish you could just ahve your Ford dealership install gears but for warranty reasons they won't, in Arizona anyways.

I had a ford dealer install mine.
What part of ohio are you in? I live about an hour from cincy and I get most of my stuff done at Pauls automotive. They do great work but you have to pay for it.
