there are so many good bands/albums it's impossible to find time to listen to them all, let alone only when driving....

I've been compiling a list, I'll put it up shortly.

Much of it is car & good rockers, older stuff mostly.

Wow, is this a subjective question, so many tastes and opinions of what good music is.

I can honestly say that with CD, MP3/Ipod and good ole cassette at my disposal in pretty much all my cars I still tend to tune to my local Classic Rock station more often than anything, particularly top down in the stang. There is so much great old rock that I never get around to listening to new stuff, to me there is just nothing better than cruising along and being surprised by an old favorite and cranking it up. I love when something unexpected pops up like say Kodachrome for one example.

That said, my default selections are usually things like this:

Any of the following bands in no particular order, I have made compilation CD's of all their best hits: Aerosmith, Van Halen, Led Zepplin, Queen, Rolling Stones Beatles, etc...

Particular CD's that I like to listen to from start to finish (very rare) and not included above already: Elvis - 30 #1 hits, Everclear - Songs from an American Movie, 70's Classic Rock Original Masters CD, Anything BNL.................others that escape me at the moment.

Edit, OK, that will take just too darn long and too many will be left out so I will have to rethink it and get back to you. The only things I can list for certain are songs from the 83' - 86' time frame when I was in high school, like say Summer of 69' for example, particulary good for my car. My tastes were much more varied back then and went from classic rock to funk and anything in between. I usually stick just to classic these days but I love stuff that reminds me of that time in my life like dare I say Beastie Boys for example. When I happen to come across them station surfing I just can't resist.

Diehard Eagles Fan here:

"Life in the Fast Lane" - Don't listen to the words, just watch out for cops.
"Already Gone" - If you wanna bark the tires on every gear change and/or straighten the curves on a canyon run; this one is a no-brainer.
"Take it Easy" - Smooth cruizin' on an open road
"Peaceful Easy Feelin' " - Dead end road, in the dark, wife/girlfriend, backseat. Yep, done that.

Other artists:
I can't remember who it was; but somebody did and "orchestrated rock & roll" version of Johnny Cash's "Ghost Riders in the Sky"

Steppenwolf: "Born to Be Wild" isn't just for Harley riders.

Doobs: "China Grove" lyrics dont work for driving, but the music does.

AC/DC: I reall-lll-llly want to see a video of somebody's freshly resto-modded triple-black "survivor" FB banging around on some dark roads with "Back in Black" in accompaniment. Is that too much to ask? Gonzo?

"Cat Scratch Fever" - Waitaminute, that would be a song for Cougar owners, huh? Great way to head for a party, though.

From one of the concert albums (EDIT: It was, in fact, "Double-Live Gonzo") ; Ted's "I know you didn't come here to get mellow..." monologue immediately followed by "Whang Dang...." (you know the rest isn't really family-friendly) would be an excellent way to pull out of a location.
Or not.
Depends how many "points" you already have on your license, I guess.
