i have an 03 gt, completely stock engine that i am now looking to supercharge. as i have stated before i used to own a 5.0. if i remember correctly to sc that engine you had to have new injectors, fuel pump, and maf, and to make better than 400 horsepower you needed new heads and internals too. i read an article in feb of this year in mmff that profiled an 03 gt sc to 407hp. no new internals, injectors, pump; all they did was bolt on a centri (8 lbs boost), exhaust, diablo tune, and one other item, intake i think, and that was it.

does that sound practicle? i mean is that engine going to eat itself in 500 miles or is this something i can do to my daily driver and get years of life out of? i have lost the article so i am a little cloudy on the specifics.

any input?

It all depends on the tune. if it is a conservative tune with a richer air/fuel ratio it can be done. if you are leaning the engine out so bad to get the 407 the engine is on extremely borrowed time. There are some guys here running decent amounts of boost on stock internals. it all depends on how you beat on it and the tune. In short yes, it can be done, not often, but can be done. just safer to get internals and bump the boost to whatever you want and not have to worry.

Look at my sig and see what it took to make 400whp on the dyno jet where I got dynoed. Some articles (magazine) tune too close to the razors edge of detonation to make the results impressive and different dynos will give different results. I might make 420whp on a different dyno and different climate. All I'm saying is you have to look at several different setups and results and average them to see what you will make with your setup. Don't expect to make exactly what some magazine got out of their kit or what some ad in a magazine claims their kit made on the best car they tested.

They didn't do it without changing the injectors and pump(or adding a BAP) if that is what you are saying. The stock fuel components won't support that much power. They could however get by on the stock internals, maf, heads etc.

i would go with bigger injectors at least. i had 30's and i was not getting enough fuel so i upgraded to 42's. i'm pushing close to 450 rwhp with stock internals. i also am advancing my timing greatly withthe help of boost cooler. like stated earlier, internals will last as long as you dont keep it in boost all the time and have a really good tune also helps the most.

The 87-92 Mustangs had forged pistons, '93's didn't.. so you didn't need to upgrade the internals to supercharge most foxbody's. There are people on the 5.0 side running twin turbo on the stock internals with no issues.

Regarding that article you read, if they didn't upgrade the injectors, then they must be seriously maxing out the stock ones. There's a chart out there somewhere that shows just how maxed they must have been at 407 hp.

If you want a daily driver that's going to be safe down the road, stay under 9psi, get a good tune, and stay off the redline. In order to transfer that sort of power, you'll end up needing to upgrade your clutch, put better tires on the back, and probably upgrade the suspension, (subframe connectors at the very least, so you don't twist the frame up.)

In short, you can do a supercharger on stock internals, but other components of the vehicle will need to be upgraded, and like most others will tell you, it's only a matter of time anyways before you'll break something. The general rule around here is, don't blow a modular if you can't afford to do an engine rebuild when it blows up.

found the article:
all stock except:
cdc shaker intake
JBA shorties
cdc side exit
vortech ho sq w/aftercooler
KW coilovers front and back
hyperformance disks/ brembo calipers
hre wheels

no mention of injectors, pump or maf yay or nay

402 rwhp from this config.

tuner was HPA Motorsports of Canada

Those are included in the vortech kit. I would suggest looking at www.modularpowerhouse.com and checking out their mongoose ktis.

You can get the vortech kit for well under 4 grand and it inlcudes everything you need, injectors, new fuel pump, tune, supercharger, brakets, etc. Its one of the most if not the most complete kit on the market.

Would it be safe to run that tune all the time or would it be much better to get an actual tune?

The mongoose kit from Modularpowerhouse is very good. It comes with everything and the tune. Its 3770. This kit has everything you need and will get you anywhere from 350-380 on a stock motor.

generally the tune is spot on, but Tim at MPH recommends you put the car on a dyno with a/f before getting into boost. If it does need adjustment (most times it will not) you can e-mail him the dyno graph and he will e-mail you a new tune to upload into the Xcal that comes in the kit.

At the flywheel maybe. Prob about 300 to the wheels.
I just picked my 03 GT up from a Vortech SQ install.
It dynoed in at 301 rwhp.

from what i hear the stock internals are good for up to 450-475...with 475 being on the edge....if you have a conservative tune, i would think you could live on 450 till you can afford internals

thoughts?

Did my shop rape me?
My non-intercooled Vortech SQ dynoed tonight at 301 RWHP.

I thought that was a major increase over the stock flywheel of 260ish.

My 03 is stock aside of flowmaster weld ins and the Vortech SQ.

i'm making 422rwhp/401rwtq on the stock block. the tune is VERY safe, timing at 13 degrees, 11.0 a/f ratio, that was made on a full temp run, & it made the power at 5300rpm. only thing is i have 30lb injectors & they are maxed out. i'm getting 42's in next week & a retune to go with it so i can spin it to 6k again :) should go 440 with a VERY conservative tune.

Mine came with 42 pound injectors and a Boost-A-Pump controller for the stock fuel pump. It was a "9psi" kit but since I ordered the Big Tube and KB's complete inlet compontents, I was sent a "10psi" (2.75") pulley so I'd be able to get the full 9psi of boost. I read that the less restrictive inlet can actually lower the boost on the KB.

if you are only making 301 to the wheels witha blower then something is wrong. Even with an auto and a conservative tune you should be around 320rw. 5sp with the mongoose kit on there will make 350-380RW non intercooled.
